My mk3 was stumbling and stalling when it rained. Replaced cap, wires, spark plugs, rotor, coil, everything is in correct firing sequence. Made sure the rotor was in the right place, still no cigar. Replaced the battery too, When i crank it it just doesnt turn over and start. Any ideas of what to look out for?

Start with the basics:

Check for fuel
Check for spark

If those are present, then it's all about timing. Assuming you've got a 4-banger...

Is the timing belt in one piece?
Has it skipped a tooth or more?
Has it ever been changed?
etc....

Good luck.

Have you checked fuel?

make sure the pump's good. 'tis worth a shot.
it made the smell of fuel when cranked
Stop killing suspects:D Do anything to confirm spark?
I replaced the plugs so I wouldnt imagine why there wouldnt be a spark. My friend has a thing to test the wires to make sure the current is going through them, when i get time we will check this.

2.0 4cyl, yes.
belt is in one piece. We reset the 1st piston to the top, to match the rotor. still no cigar.

this might sound crazy, but i had a no start on my car a few months ago. replaced all the same crap. turns out it was the coolant temp sensor that was out and not allowing the engine to turn over. might be worth a try.

New spark plugs does not guaranty that there's electricity getting to them.
Pull a plug out lay it against something metal and try to start the car, is it sparking?

Did you check all your timing marks per the bently manual or dan j reeds page ?
Why did the timing need to be reset?

If your problem started when the car was wet it's most likely a problem with your coil or ignition system.
