Dealership told me my trans is shot. Quoted me 5k. They said there were no error codes because it was "internal" Does that make sense? I just don't know what to do. Any suggestions? Everything I've researched says the 02s are notorious for transmission problems. Please advise.
thanks

auto, manual?

You probably have the same "Notoriously horrible" tranny I have. should be the 09a EYP (JATCO) tranny, right? Yea, its a POS. My guy gave me a 5k quote also. They can't be opened and fixed. you are going to want a re-manufactured one, There, the issue has been fixed. but, 5k, nonetheless.

Mine can't go in reverse AND 2nd to 3rd and 4th to 3rd is a NIGHTMARE of a shift...its eaten 3 dogbone assemblies so far.

good luck bro.

yes it's an automatic. I have called a local transmission shop that quoted me a worse cas scenario of $3500. And yes, I could get a decent mk4 for same or cheaper. Already found a few on craigslist just looking for parts. This is just insane.
What is an 02m?
I need a beer or somethin'

From what "my guy" tells me: The tranny is engine specific. So, if i have a AWP motor, i can't put anything BUT thr JATCO 09A EYP back in. I have asked about swapping ECUs and Trans Computers, but "my guy" says nope...

Also, no option to rebuild. No parts available other than solenoids, or so it would seem. VW and the JACTO ppl are aware of this and basically chalk it up to, "it was a bad idea to use JATCO"... so yea.

Im waiting for mine to completely die then yes, i will be buying another MK4, putting all the goodies from one to the other and crying myself to sleep because i bought a car that i really couldn't ever use..

O2M = 2002 Manual?

Can't i just find a used one in good condition? I asked this question too. "My guy" told me that ALL the 09a EYPs are PRONE to this. So if it doesn't do it yet, it will.

how would I find out for sure if mine is also the 09a EYP (JATCO) tranny? Not that it matters at this point I guess. Just curious.

What were the symptoms before your gears started to die on you?
Just yesterday afternoon it started jerking into the lower gears (not slipping), and then it started jerking (but not as bad) when it was downshifting. I was able to get to the dealership last night to drop it off without problem. My MIL light was already on from the cat conv so I don't know if it would have come on or not. I think they just didn't give me the codes because they know last time (a month ago) after they quoted me 1900 to replace CV joints and front axle I took it up the road and had it done for 700. It had been riding so good. Just drove it to St Louis and back this past weekend with no issues (10 hrs roundtrip).

Find a new guy. Do a manual swap.

You're more than welcome to try doing a flush on the tranny. I went to like 5 shops before they said they could do it.. replaced some solenoids and flushed the fluid and replaced (THAT was expensive..) and it didn't cure or even help the problem.

Your tranny is dying. it TOTALLY sucks. The only reason i am not acting like its a huge deal, is because i have been dealing with mine for over 6 months. :screwy:

id be REALLY interested if someone comes through with a swap. cause the way it was explained to me, is going from a auto to a manual required ECUs, TCMs, physical modification to the floor, extra materials to make it all happen.

Will come under 5k??????

I'm not a technician, i just pay one.
