I have thule bars and have no base to carry things on like wheels or what not.

What wood do you all use for the base of your roof racks that still look good, no 2x4's...

Picture examples with it on car and specs of the wood and what not
:p

There's a Pepboys here that sells Thule and other rack items. If you want to go that route i'm pretty sure they weren't to expensive...plus you wont have to measure, cut, sand, stain, drill, mount, and worry about them
ive already got the rack, im just looking to go the "stylish" way with wood panels.

how much is #1 5/4 pine?

go to any lowes or home depot...

btw #1 is the grade of the lumber and 5/4" is the size (actually is 1" finished)...they should sell it in 6' and 8' lengths...

Finally a thread where I can provide some usefull info! :D

here's my home-made roof box, built out of 1" x 4" knotty pine, stained flat black.
I added a bicycle fork mount, and tie downs for the cargo net.
The lights are for off-roading and rally-X

for those who attach the wood planks to the base bars

how do you attach them and what do you use as far as nuts and bolts?

im looking for a clean way to do it, but would prefer to not have to drill in to the base bars themselves...
and BTW to be more clear, i want to attach each individual plank to the base bars

You could use come pipe clamps to go under the thule bars and screw into the planks. That would probably be the least noticeable way. A few friends have done it that way, and it does look much cleaner. I bolted mine throught the bars just to make it extra secure, but it's deifintely not necessary.

I had a buddy show me those today at home depot.

I had a hard time deciding which way to do it.
Also, do u have any pictures of the pipe clamp and how it would mount on?, im not quite seeing which way this pipe clamp would go on

check out "ipe" also known as brazilian hardwood. cool super dark natural tone and 3 times as hard as oak. check craigslist for contractors selling extra supply cheap. its been popular for decking, siding and even hardwood flooring lately.

Heh, I used some bed frame rails to make the whole thing.
Now I have a bunk bed base that I'm gonna use to make a basket.
But one of my Thule feet are broken.
I need to get another before the racks can go back on.
