Why in the world is my automatic not engaging when I start from a dead stop and it's in drive? I know, I know, I know: I'm a (insert derogatory word here) for driving an automatic but it's what I'm stuck with until I can sell it. But anyways, today when I was driving I came to a stop sign and when I went to start again the engine reved but I didn't move forward  ... I put it into first then it went and just "shifted" through the gears on the gear selector. Once I start again I can put it in drive and it shifts fine but whenever I start again, I have to put it back into first and go through the same process again. :banghead:

Any ideas?

sell it....

OT: sorry no idea but that really sucks. Good luck figuring it out, check the engine and transmission forums:thumbup:
free bump too

I"ve had a similar issue with my tiptronic- happened a couple of times one afternoon coming home from work a month or so ago, but it's not occurred since then.

mine seemed to get hung up in first gear though, but same sort of problem... I shifted to park & back to drive, and it worked fine.

try replacing tranny filter and fluid.....

I was thinking that it had something to do with the transmission too but it shifts fine and goes through all the gears with out any problems after it's started moving; it just won't start moving in drive, 3rd, or 2nd

you're probably are granny shiftin and not double clutchin like you should...

anyways, that's really strange that it works if you go to first and shift through. I dont know much about transmissions let alone automatics, and Im pulling this out of my ass but the gear selector uses some sort of electrical signals to tell the car which gear its in, does it not? If it works manually (on 1 and 2 etc) than it seems like the signal is screwed up when in drive. I dont think tranny fluid and what not would help. Remember, I dont know **** so I am probably wrong and this is gods way of telling you to not drive an automatic.

Scan with Vag-com. Then fluid flush and a new filter. You are probably just low on fluid. If you continue to drive it this way you will ruin your transmission. Search for kansascitytdi, he has an excellent website.
