Re: k04 potential (1.8t caracterized)

it depends on which k04, here's the compressor map for a k04-020 (that's from a 225 TT)
Image

This is the Turbo Efficency calculated for a K04 in a TT 1.8T.
RPM Turbo Effizienz
1000 0,015
1500 0,0225
2000 0,03
2500 0,0375
3000 0,045
3500 0,0525
4000 0,06
4500 0,0675
5000 0,075
5500 0,0825
6000 0,09
6500 0,0975
7000 0,105
Max boost is about 28 psi, pushing about 220 g/s, and max flow is about 330 g/s at 14.7. So, people thinking the all K04s are only efficient at 1 bar is wrong.

Re: k04 potential (jetta-child)

Haven't really ran my car in the 1/4 yet, will once I've got my clutch all set up. I had been plagued with some problems...dv not being able to handle my boost, then a crack in my fmic, and my oem clutch went out...now having my stg 3 clutch put in. Hopefully, it'll hold!

I have 225 TT (well, was a 225) lol - about the hp, I'm pushing the K04's numbers - and bet I'm pushing pretty good numbers. Unfortunately no AWD dynos in my area.

I get a ride in that monster when you're done

Re: k04 potential (gary_phd)

K04-01 for the transverse, K04-15 for the long. motors...
As for the original question I've been running 21-25psi peak for the last year with no problems http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Re: k04 potential (Shaun@SG)

k04-020 were used on 225 TTs from 2/1/99, then changed to k04-022 from 12/1/99, and after 9/1/00 changed to k04-023. All are rated the same, however, I'm not sure if anything internally had changed. I think this may have been just a serial number change (or they may have fortified the turbo more somehow). Btw, I've also got a k04-023.
Interesting to note is that the RS4 turbo (k04-025 and 026) are rated at 380hp, wondering if this will bolt onto our manifolds?
The k04-015 were used as an A4 upgrade starting in 7/96, and is rated at 210hp.
According to Borg Warner, the k04-001 was originally used for a Ford F190 from 1991 (a desiel engine). The turbo is only rated as 100 hp.

Re: k04 potential (gary_phd)

The K04-025 and -026 won't bolt up to any VWs. Also, remember that they are rated at 380hp, but that's for two of them. The S4 turbos are tiny, and the RS4 turbos aren't that much bigger...you might even see better results from the -001 anyway.
The K04 as a class is rated for 200g/s flow (with the K03 rated for 170g/s). This is from the 3K Warner website.
I think the safe limit for the K04-001 is probably not much more than just the GIAC CLK02 or CLGL12 files (i.e. no manual boost increases on top of the software). Some people have used "race" N75 valves on top of K04 files with good results (chris86vw) but some people have done that and are now replacing the turbo (FlyinTurbo). Note that both were running 2.5" exhausts.
I'm seeing spikes to 25psi on those rare occasions that my clutch holds for a second. I'm running the CLK02 software now with the boostvalve open (so it's not adding anything). Once I get my new clutch in (waiting for Sonny Lowe's new lift to arrive) I will do some extensive testing of software and various wastegate control setups.
