Water pump pulley off (3 bolts) will allow the compressor belt to come off. Replace the alternator belt. Slip the compressor belt back on & replace WP pulley & your done. 1/2hr job this way but I also have the speDcial water pump pulley holder tool & un-stripped allen bolts that have a dab of grease on the threads from the last time I had it off.

Next time replace the belts before they break.
This is how I ended up doing it for him when he arrived at my house. I'd rather give birth out my ass then mess with the rusted up pivot bolts for his AC compressor again. Had to do that last year around this time.

Watch out for the AC pump top wire. Mine got pinched between the pump and bracket when the pump was tightened. Had to take it apart again and repair the wire to get the ac to work.

There needs to be a better setup for sure.

I have found taking a jack with a section of 2x4 to apply upward pressure on the ac compressor helpful to free up my hands to deal with the bolts. I agree this is a horrible design and don't look forward to it again...
I do something like this as well, except with the wood over the top and a strap down under the A/C or alternator:

Just lift up to put the desired tension on the belt(s) and then tighten down the adjuster hardware.

That is an awesome idea, I remember when we were messing with my car, and diive4sho's old rabbit...we were using our own strength to pull the alt up as much as possible while tightening the bolts.

I was wondering why this thread popped up in my new posts.

its true, a 17mm crows foot is literally the only "special" tool you need to adjust the AC compressor.

i *think* there are some bracket assemblies which are superior to the original for AC/diesel
right now i cant remember what specifically they were from

but generally this is your evil monster:

it can be modified to allow MUCH EASIER adjustments.

however i modified the alternator bracket and changed alternators to aid in all further adjustment of that belt

Image

slice off the teeth on one of these

then weld it TRUE AND SQUARE to your diesel bracket

plop the bracket in a vice and bend it slightly as required (fitting and testing required)

this works miracles for any CARRIAGE bolt style bracket & alt (edit carriage bolt)

i use 90amp alternators.

Definitely some good information!

That works wonders for the alternator, but why in the hades did they use it for the latter a/c belt tensioners.......
