Meh. Diesels are massively overrated around here. I've owned and liked 'em, but they're hardly the be all and end all, and not really worth much lust and yearning. I think they're getting less and less compelling as time goes on, too - they're less and less exceptional in terms of mileage, especially for the price they're sold for.

That's a joke, right? My car ways less than a GTI. And there are plenty of very fast Diesels out there. The AWD Q5 with the 3.0TDI is faster (6.5 s 0-62mph) than the one with the 3.2 V6 (6.9s 0-62). And 6.5 s is pretty fast for an SUV that can also tow 4,000 to 5,000 lbs...

IMO, a few internet builds does not constitute "plenty of very fast diesels out there." Diesels are great for trucks/SUV's, machinery, commuter econoboxes - pretty much everything except performance cars (and motorcycles).

I'm not saying it can't be done, but that it makes little sense from a design and manufacturing standpoint.

You're absolutely right!!!!!! But lets forget the 3,5,7 series. Audi A3,4,5,6,7,8 and Q series, and all the other brands world over

Not sure they are overrated in TCL, but it seems to me you are assuming manufacturers are not also improving Diesel car mileage over time, when recent evidence is quite the contrary. As to price, sure, some of the added price is for the engine and emissions equipment - but don't forget that almost all Diesels available in the US are built in Europe, so you have the same high labor cost and exchange rate as for other European cars, which makes them somewhat less competitive compared to, e.g., Korean-built cars.
