I have a 1980 diesel rabbit and I don't know what's wrong. Everything electrical will not work, the car overheats within 10 minutes of running and i replaced the thermestat (still over heated) and then i removed it completely and it still over heats. Also, while it was running, when shifting turns the lights on for a few seconds but refuses to shift into 3rd, when I tried, the car turned off and I just slap it into 2nd while its still rolling and it kick started it again...then it over heated but it also over heats even when it was idleing. My friend said it might be a blow head gasket. if anyone has pics of the engine that runs that would help a lot. smoke is nomal no blue or nothing like that. :banghead:

It sounds like the radiator may be plugged. Either that, or your head gasket is blown. Check to see if the overflow tank is pressurizing when the car is running. If it's blowing a lot of bubbles, etc, you have a blown head gasket. If not, I'd have the radiator checked out.
