So i just got this mk3 vr gti its a 99 and while i was replacing alot of missing tail lights i found out that when i put the reverse lights in they just keep a constant power to them. The rear plates off the tail lights are not corroded and the reverse switch is fine.

If i remove or unplug the reverse switch the reverse lights stay on still. I dont know if they may be shorting out somewhere but i need an inspection asap i already have a warning from an officer of the law

The reverse lights are probably spliced into something else. See when your reverse lights get power and go from there. If it's as soon as the car is on, look at what could possibly do that. If it's after you turn on your other lights, check for splices near the light housings.

And are you sure you're looking at the reverse switch and not the speed sensor? Reverse switch only has 2 wires running to it.

yeah i do know the difference between the two. And it turns on right when the key is flipped on so its getting power when the ignition is on and it seems that it has nothin to do with the lights(probably not spliced in with the lights..

does anyone know a trick lol that i might not have checked, i am pretty sure i am going to end up following the wires through the car to find out if they are shorted out or spliced somewhere

And thank you for the reply

i Dont know about that . I did unplug it and the lights would still stay on. (as posted in the thread) i also removed the switch and they were still lit, i did not replace it because i dont see how that would make a difference isnt the switch allowing the power to go to the reverse lights?

im planning on looking for that today, gonna take a half day off school.:)
Go through the fuses, taking one out at a time and see if one of those stop the light; Then you know u found it.

reverse lights staying on as well

yes i just got a 99 cabrio with this same problem for the reverse lights staying on was wondering if you ever found a solution to the problem i was thinking maybe there is a relay somewhere for the reverse lights and it could be stuck?

there is no relay. all it is is a switch on the trans, running to the fusebox, though a fuse, and out to the tail lights.

when you say you removed the reverse switch, did you unplug it from the switch? or leave the switch still connected?

unplug the switch and see if it's still on.

I just had my whole wiring checked through and there is a relay it runs through atleast on my 99 gti and we found no solution, There must be a short somewhere in my car i just dont have the time with work and school to find it. We tested the power goin to the switch and it wasnt recieving power and we tested the switch and the relay both work and the fuse box had no problems. Just A VW Wiring Mess To PISS PEOPLE OFF lol. But yeah all i have to say is **** this ****
