Well, I can't get my 98 Jetta's 5th gear to work - it's gone, I think.
Which is easier and cheaper and better, to replace the 5th gear or the transmission, itself.
If replacing the 5th gear, is the better option, how do you do it and do you have to remove the tranny?

Thanks.

I've not done it myself, but they say it can be done with the trans still in the car.

I'm not sure which would be easier... to replace the trans it has to come out, to replace 5th you have to remove the 5th housing... I'd say they both suck.

The 5th swap will be cheaper, but only if the trans is OK and can take another 5th. If it was ran low on oil and killed 5th and the output shaft splines, you need another trans or more rebuild work on the damaged one than just a 5th swap.

I have a 5th Swap page on the site in my sig that shows how to swap 5th in the trans, but it doesn't show it being done in the car.

A used trans will be $300 or more, a 5th swap will be half as much. The parts needed to swap a new 5th gear in will run about $35 or so, the gears will vary depending on where you get them, I've seen as cheap as $50, and as much as $150 for a set of 5th gears.
