Re: anybody want a lincoln blackwood? (bigelliot)

no matter what you all say, its a gay truck. useless and made all fancy, its not what a truck was suposed to look like, then you got half the world trowing on 24in wheels and rolling down the road thinking they have something. i would rather ride in an f-150 and not be afraid of putting a scratch in its bed. but well thats my opinion, if you like it thats cool.

a) The Blackwood was hatched with similar intentions as the Escalade EXT.
b) It wasn't as good, nearly every review I've read highly reccomends the GM offering ahead of the Ford.
c) No one buys them--it was supposed to be a limited-edition, but poor sales caused it to be even more limited than anyone imagined. I can't recall an exact number, but they only sold a fraction of the target.
d) All of this means it's a great deal. I've heard of dealers charginf the full $56K MSRP, and throwing in a Mercury Cougar for free. It's hardly the best lux-pickup money can buy, but it's a screamin' deal nonetheless. Yes, we know it's a bastard child F150 with a waterfall grille...but if you can stomach it, go for it. $20K off sticker doesn't happen often in the automotive world...
...that said, any time anything goes on sale, there's a good reason!

What's a "smoking" deal when nobody wants them anyway?
Only smoke I see is from the AK I'd use to dispatch it. Yuck.

Economics 101 can tell you that smart people make their decisions at the margin, in terms of marginal cost and marginal benefit.
Is it worth $5 for a bottle of water if you're thirsty? Maybe not. Is it worth $3? $2? $1.50? There's a point at which it becomes attractive.
Would I want a Blackwood for $56K? No way, and neither does anyone else! But as they keep shaving the cost, it becomes more and more attractive. It will never be a great vehicle*, but it can still be a great buy.
* I imagine it'll be worth a mint someday because they're so rare

And if I trade in my gti, I could get it for only about $25k out the door. Not too shabby. I'm going go seriously consider this -- afterall, not much is more pimpin' than a bigass black truck with pinstripes and huge chrome wheels.

(yeah, I really am serious).
I'll stop by after work and let you guys know how it turns out. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Actually, the Escalade EXT was hatched with the same idea as the Blackwood (not the other way around), which hit the show circuits long before the Caddy (even though the Caddy hit the streets first). I like the looks of the Blackwood better than the Caddy, but I'm not in the market for either. It's better as a one off show truck exercise in "what if" than an actual production vehicle.

Re: anybody want a lincoln blackwood? (bigelliot)

if i had the dough i would buy it and put it away, this is gonna be one of those cars that in 30 years time you will take it to Barrett Jackson and get a fortune for it, they only sold like 1200 of these and in 30 years they will be one of the rarest lincolns ever

Re: anybody want a lincoln blackwood? (Chris V)

So can somebody explain to me why this was a flop while the Escalade EXT was a success???
(If it was because comparison tests ranked it below the Escalade, then nobody would buy Cavaliers either, which is clearly not the case.)

That sounds really condescending to someone who has taken econ 101 and feels that economic principles still do not negate his opinion. In any case, depreciation for luxury vehicles can be quite devastating precisely because there is not very much "need" for them after they are no longer the newest and best thing. Combine the fact that this is a prettified half-truck with the fact that it is also yesterday's news and I'd pin its atractive price point just about at $35,000 - or the price of the loaded F150 that your regular truck poseur is shopping for.
I'd buy it for a dollar. Since the cars I drive are generally given to me, I suppose that's quite flattering!

Several reasons:
1) It's only 2WD (RWD, to be specific). Lincoln promoted the vehicle to folks looking to tow their boat and horse trailers. Of course, as anyone who's ever towed either will tell you, the last thing you want is RWD. It's gets stuck in the mud when pulling a horse trailer (the hitch, the trailer and the horses will all weigh heavily on that back bumper). And can you just imagine trying to drive a RWD car up a wet, slimy boat ramp? It's an awful experience.
2) It came in only one color combination: black on black. You need at least three exterior colors for any car on launch (preferably more), and for a luxury four-seat passenger vehicle, you need more than one interior trim.
3) The trunk is useless. It's relatively small for such a large vehicle, and the power-operated top is not removable.
4) It's still a truck. This isn't a criticism of trucks and SUVs, mind you. But people buy these vehicles for the "what if" factor? What if I need to haul nine people, or tow a horse trailer, or haul home a new lawnmower? Trucks and SUVs answer those what-ifs, even though most owners never actually need them answered. But the Blackwood, because of the reasons outlined above, can't do that. It turns out consumers want the practicality trucks and SUVs afford, even if they aren't ever going to use it.
That, BTW, is why the Escalade EXT succeeds: it's all the versatility of a regular truck (actually, more, since it's based on the Avalanche) with all the luxury of a premium vehicle. I think Caddy was outselling Lincoln something like 20-1 at one point.

Re: anybody want a lincoln blackwood? (kyokoris)

It is the ideal garage companion to a W8 Passat.
Also speaking of deals. I saw closeout deals on 2003 XJRs the other day in the busniess section of the paper. $76000 marked down to $55000 on the two they had in stock.
Cheers
Chris

Re: anybody want a lincoln blackwood? (CBJ)

Actually Brian, towing a boat with RWD IS preferable, because of the greater towing capacity. I tow my boat with the Jimmy, which is 2WD only.
That said, most people are saying "for that price, it better have 4 wheel drive" and thats the end of it.
For $35,000, its a pretty decent deal.

Re: anybody want a lincoln blackwood? (mtrainVR6)

Speaking as a boat tower and truck driver, well, E150 anyway, I can say that I would want 4x4 in my next tow vehicle. Slimey ramps are just part of the story. It would also have to launch on a dirt boat lanch with low traction. and have the ground clearance to pull the boat and the people through the woods. and it would need a bed for hauling junk.
so, next comes the question- would you scratch up a 36 thousand dollar truck? no. But if I was in the market for such a vehicle, yes I would, because it would probably be a second or third car, not sharing ritzy duties, but still allowing me to be in luxury and project that image to the other people on the highway or horse show or whatever.
In essence, not only would it be a nice truck, but it wouldn't be doing double duty as a luxury car. Finally, where's the heavy duty suspension? Rich people have BIG boats.
but, what if somebody swapped in a 4x4, heavy duty suspension, and put a bed on the back? how much would that add to the price, like 20 grand?

Re: anybody want a lincoln blackwood? (MGQ)

I just saw one of these yesterday while in Downtown LA. At first I thought somebody put a Lincoln Navigator front end on a truck or something

(seriously) because it looked very awkward and mismatched in person. It was some big mexican dude driving one, I feel pity for the guy if he paid full price for it. That thing is completely tasteless http://****************.com/smile/emthdown.gif
