Just back from a 600 mile round trip with my 91 Etienne cabby. On the last leg of the trip, I filled up and ran 352 miles before a refill of 10.5 gallons. This resulted in a 33mpg average. On a leg outbound, I got a 30.6 mpg average.

Whats your best real no bs mpg?

I had two adults in the car with their luggage, no a/c the whole time, average speed 70 mph, very few stops.

I go by the actual gas put in the car to eliminate the guessing from an inaccurate fuel gauge.

The later cabbies have 13 gallon tanks.

This might be a stupid question but it pertains to my mpgs:

What does the orange section of the gas gauge mean? I thought it was the reserve but if that's so, I can't believe how much gas I'm eating up.

Assuming the orange section is the 'reserve" tank, I typically see 20 mpg. This is highway cruising, ~65-70 mph (I say about due to the fact that my speedo is off by a fair amount), no AC installed, rarely shifting after 3k.

I suspect my timing is off a degree or two (need to get that adjusted) and my suspension needs work (parts en route) but I feel like this should be a lot more efficient given the size of the car and engine.

The best I ever got out of my Cabby was 32mpg, top down, SLC to PDX in 11hrs.

Now adays I'm probably in the 18-22mpg range. Tough to say since the odometer only works when it wants to. Sometime I'll get a decent measurement with the 5th gear swap (i run a 2H tranny)

I had a Rabbit GTI, with all the EGR stuff deleted, and in a full day of very spirited driving along the coast and coast range, pulled 36mpg! Best gasoline mpg I had ever gotten. I think that fuel economy, based on this day, is best when you keep the motor in the torque curve, where it's most effecient

At first I thought you got 33 mpg with ac. Regardless, that's pretty impressive.

I just finished doing a bunch of work to my car. A 1992 with stock 2H, new headgasket and valve job, A1 dual outlet manifold and downpipe, high flow cat, crappy firestone catback (from PO), and a recent manual swap to a FO with a 0.76 5th gear. With this set up, I got 31 mpg with 50% highway driving averaging 70 mph, 45% stop and go, and five percent spirited flogging. I am hoping on a long highway trip I can get 35.

Does anybody else besides me find it amazing that cars built over 20 years ago, could even come anywhere close to the mpg numbers posted?

I knew the car would get good mileage, but I didn't believe reports of over 30mpg on hiway until I saw it myself.

In town driving, I regularly get 24-25 mpg..but 33 on the hiway..wow!

I always wondered how the VR6 does in mileage..the guy who posted his mileage ain't nothing to sneeze at either.

58 bug-eye sprite 948cc engine consistently over 40 mpg, 67 MG Midget 1100 cc engine 55 mpg
81 diesel rabbit 58mpg 90 cabriolet 5spd 42 mpg highway, 92 Cabriolet Auto 30mpg on 93 octane
93 Cabriolet 32 mpg on 93 octane.
Both cabbies in town consistantly get 23-25mpg.

Most of the cabbies cruised at 70-75 top up.

Who says that they didn't build them well back in the day.

I'm consistently getting 20mpg in town with 50/50 spirited/relaxed driving, with 5th gear not usable at all. Can't wait to swap in a new 5th to see what improvement I can get.

What would be an upgrade for 5th to maximize fuel economy and still have enough power to maintain highway speeds?
