IIRC, I think he was going to answer a call on his cellphone. As he tried to get it out of his pocket, the gas vapours accumulating under the station roof exploded. He died three days later due to his burns.

Mythbusters busted cellphones igniting gas vapours cos they just aren't powerful enough. Could maybe have been a torch though?
Since Darwin won in the end I guess we'll never know for sure.
