Last thing left to service is the gear oil and back axle, which should have a GL-4 SAE 75W-90. Found this vag oil in an internet shop for a good price. It says fully synthetic 75W-90...but is called GL-4+?

I know the IV R32 should only have GL-4, and GL-5 will mess up the gearbox...so what is this + all about? Will this vag oil suit the R both front and rear?

Whoa there bunky!

G052 171 A2 only goes in the front transmission and transfer case.

VW call it G51 SAE 75W/90 (synthetic oil)

The rear differential has different oil:

Rear Axle oil: G 052 145 A SAE 75W-90 (synthetic oil)

Capacity: 1.0 litre for oil change

The oil is available (here in Australia at least) in one or half litre bottles

Part number for 1 litre bottle = G 052 145 S2

Part number for 0.5 litre bottle = G 052 145 A1

Part numbers for bottles may vary in US due to non-metric labelling or something

:)

Ok Steve, after idk how many times ive heard u say this, there has got to be a reason. im purchasing mine today.... This is my one last ditch effort beefore i buy a new rearend... is THIS rear diff fluid.. Not to mention my front needs new fluid too. Shop put mobil one in there...ICK.

Sorry for confusion.

G 052 145 A is what VW designate the oil (like G51 for the front)

That particular number is not an actual part number as such.

The part numbers are just the various bottles they supply.
