I just bought a 1984 Mark II Volkswagen Golf GTI. I don't know a whole lot about VW's, But this is my 2nd. I had a 1989 jetta for a couple years and I've been wanting a golf since I got rid of it.

Enough words, here are a couple pictures.

I'll try not to post to many noobie questions, but here is the first. The car came with a broken lower front lip kinda thing, is it worth me fixing or could I find a better replacement?

pretty interesting car. looks to be a real deal euro 84 gti? :sly:

if it is thats awesome!
From what I've read and what I was told is it is gray marked, which means it was imported strait from Germany.

Awesome way to start! Just be really careful, be aware that that is not like other Golfs in the USA of that vintage. Do a lot of reading before you start doing anything.
Haha, I've found that out the hard way, the stock dashboard was cracked beyond repair, so I put in another from an american VW and it was a huge PITA!

Yeah, definitely change it, it's more annoying, looks different, and is heavier. The usa gold I've noticed used noticeably heavier plastics everywhere.

Good news is that by being agti, it likely had no cart and had the euro 112hp engine. Interior pics? :)

The guy I bought it from said it has the better "solid head"? But it does have a cat, it required one to be put on to pass U.S. inspection. It had to pass an emissions test to qualify for U.S. insurance. But I want to redo the exhaust system when I get some money anyway.

Here are the wolf race 15" wheels and front drilled rotors.

Ground control coilovers all the way around.

Rear Disc conversion, I'm not sure what vehicle they came from.

Blue shocks on just the rear, not sure the brand?

Interior pic from the open hatch door.

The newer dash. Eh, I don't care for it. It looks very close to the original, but all the small differences made me wanna break it in half when I was installing it.

Font seats, sadly I'll have to restitch or replace.

Back seats still in great shape.

Corrado steering wheel, the red Vw symbol was my little touch.

Original mileage.

Original dash. (notice no spot for VIN plate). I might try to repair this, but it may be a hopeless cause.

one more shot in the daylight.

It needs the be cleaned up pretty bad though:)

nice find. That does look to be a euro GTI. I'm pretty sure that all mk2 gti's came with rear disc setups. That is an aftermarket lower air dam (spoiler). Post some more pictures and look for any name or number on it. Maybe the vortex can ID it.

cool find :thumbup::beer:

edit: I'm pretty sure it has an old skool body kit after looking some more. Maybe BBS or Zender?

Yeah it's part of the flares, side skirts, and rear diffuser kit.

The rear discs are OEM, all GTIs had them. The blue rear struts could be Tockio, not abad brand, but the white ones are better (blue os OEM replacement, white is damping adjustable). IIRC it does have a solid lifter head, which needs valve adjustments. It's better for higher revving though, and if you don't like it or don't plan to rev to 8k you can sell it and get a hydro lifter head and it'll still make the same power and all. if you want to keep it original, keep it :) yeah that dash is gross inside, lol. The OEm one does look beyond repair, but if you wanted to recover I'm sure you could. Too bad about the seats :( Also really cool to see a rare OEM single round red stripe grille! I have only seen that in pictures.

I work at advance auto parts and our systems show that the american gti's didn't get rear disc until 85, mine is an 84. But i'm wondering if it's because it's a euro car? Or the advance systems suck, which is possible.

I need to clean up the bay a little more and look for the engine code if there is one on there. (sorry I'm used to hondas which usually have the code right in front)

I'm going to keep everything I have with the car for now, because I'm undecided which direction I want to go with it.

Thanks for all the replies, and I'll probably update this thread as I go along.

EDIT: Oh and it is a zender body kit, it's labeled right on the side skirts  I feel like an idiot for not looking closer.

We didn't get amk2 until 85, the mk1 didn't have rear disc. Europe got the mk2 a year early.

The engine code is between the 3 and 4 cylinders, on the flat spot near the head gasket. 2 letters and a serial number.
This is kinda what I was guessing while I was looking through our system today, so when I buy parts for it, I should get 85 gti parts?

thanks for the code location too by the way.
