Here is the VIN for a GLX Jetta
Is it the 200 or 174 HP VR6?

what year? 1999-2001 had the 12 valve 174HP VR6. While 2002 and later GLX models have the new 24 valve 200HP VR6

It's a 2002 but I thought the 200HP came mid year.

if you can see the car, pop the hood and if you see red spark plug wires its a 12v

It's a 2002 according to the VIN. But Jetta GLX for 2002 had both engines. The early ones had the 174 hp while the later ones (2002.5) had the newer 24V 200 hp.

Which digit is the engine code. I can't believe both VR6 engines had the same code.

red wires showing = 12v
no wires showing on the cover = 24v

I think all the 24V's got a 6-speed. That might clue you in unless its an auto.

It's an auto. Guess I'll have to go back to the dealer to find out.

All Jetta GLXs with the 24v VR6 have the tiptronic tranny...

For 2002, the 'H' is a 200hp 24v VR6 and a 'G' would be a 174hp 12v.

you can't mistake a 12v for 24v that's all i gotta say
pop open the hood and look mang!

Maybe he is looking at an online ad that has the VIN, but no pics or details otherwise of the engine.

I briefly looked at the car. I got the VIN on the dealers site.

i thought that in 2000 they changed to the 24 valve.... like the 2000.5 VR6 models ahd 200 bhp

maybe the dealer blew smoke up there.... how hard is it to change the head to a 24 valve?

I hope you are kidding. There is more to it than just the heads.
Are you happy /w your 174? Never bothered your before, don't sweat it now. I doubt there is MUCH diff. in noticable power. I was just curious.
