FRANKFURT -(Dow Jones)- General Motors Co. (GM) aims to co-operate with German car maker BMW AG (BMW.XE) and is primarily interesting in gasoline and diesel engines, according to a report in the latest edition of Spiegel magazine.
Stephen Girsky, the GM board member in charge of strategy, has made enquiries at BMW to start discussions on "far-reaching joint projects," the article says, without citing the source of the information.
Neither General Motors nor BMW were immediately available for comment Sunday.
BMW's Chief Executive Norbert Reithofer has previously said that BMW would be interested in selling engines to other companies so long as such a move wouldn't strengthen a direct competitor's position or damage BMW's own image, the article says.
General Motors is at an advanced stage in developing a fuel cell and could offer co-operation in that field, Spiegel says.
The technology behind GM's Opel Ampera electric vehicle would also be of interest to BMW, according to the report.
BMW last week signed an agreement with U.S. vehicle manufacturer Fisker Automotive Inc. to deliver up to 100,000 engine units a year.
