I have a 2001 Passat GLX 4Motion (pre-facelift) and I am right in the middle of a timing belt change. I am following directions from both the Bentley and here: http://phatcat_ed.tripod.com/V6.htm

PhatCat's writeup is fantastic and I got to the point where I was ready to swing the lock carrier out when I noticed that it was still restricted by what I believe are AC lines that run underneath the oilpan. So it looks like VW changed the design again....

I can still do the belt/waterpump etc. but it will be in service position rather than with the lock carrier swung out of the way.

Timing belt

Timing belt replacement went without a hitch. Replaced the timingbelt, tensioner and idler, waterpump, thermostat as well as the serp belt and tensioner. Car runs like a top.

Timing belt

All in all it took about 5 hours with breaks in between. I've done timing belts on transverse engined VWs which are not even close to being the pain in the ass that these passats are. There's a lot more to do like pulling the front end out (service position) and all of the pulleys and other things that need to be removed to get to the timing belt. If you are going to do this I would suggest getting the cam lock bar and the crank pin. They are invaluable in making sure the cams and crank don't move when removing and installing the belt. Bentley also specifies some other tools but I made do. I also had a buddy helping just in case I brain-farted.
