getting blink codes

I got a 94 golf with OBD1 with the black obd2 connector. I am trying to get blink codes out of this car with no luck. I have shorted lines 4&15 for 4+ seconds as instructed, but the CEL disappears after I pull the jumper out.

If I put the jumper in, the CEL comes back on but again disappears after I pull the jumper out. Is there some special trick I am missing?

Were you able to figure out this issue? I'm having the same problem...

I never did get the vehicle to output a blink code. I ended up using a VW specific code reader to get the trouble code.

I never had a problem when I did it and I used a jumper wire, I can't find the "how-to" that I used but here is one off the net it shows the wires and everything else.

This one also mentions a blink code plug but I didn't have one i used a short piece of single strand speaker wire.
