I'm nearing the point of divergence with my next car purchase (#20). The wise thing would be to choose something responsible that I can live with over time and will serve me well, both with dependability and low cost of ownership. The car guy side of me says the contrary: get a car that is a riot to drive and fun to own--another Mustang (#8). So, what's the best way to proceed from here? Set up an Excel spreadsheet and go at it?

I think I would lean with what you currently have, though if financially set, then it may be worth the plunge and get that mustang you want.

I was going through something similar, though whether buying an older car in addition to what I have right now would end up being an endless money pit vs saving the money up for other things. So far leaning to keeping what I have, though the ever thought of using that money to spend on that car, I want to use for a manual tranny swap:screwy:

I never thought of it this way. I've always bought what I liked, the only "responsibility" aspect is whether or not I could afford the purchase. I bought the mustang because it was badass and the best performance value in the new car market. But if it was out at the time, I could have just as easily bought a Golf R, which some may feel is more practical than the stang. Meh, buy what makes you happy as long as you can afford it.

I'm 6'3" 200lb. I drive a Fit currently but the auto tranny kills the car in any environment other than stop-and-go traffic.
Agreed completely, except that I'm a twerp. ;)

A manual Fit wouldn't be bad, but mine's an auto, too. The "flappy paddles" I find exactly no fun at all. I'm trying to walk that tightrope, myself. I'm looking far and wide for the next purchase, including the Chevy Spark turbo. That could be a real hoot.

I'm in a similar boat.

I daily an auto BMW, and it's a super nice car. But I don't enjoy it.

I'm looking to get into an MKVI GTI w/ manual trans. With an APR tune, I can see 300 ft lbs of torque and get 34 mpg highway (I have a ~35 mile commute that's 95% hwy.)

What would be the most sensible for me? Get back into a 90's 3.8 buick for $1500 (regularly got ~30mpg from the last one I had) and go forth.

Sigh.
