I have an 86 jetta gl . i recently hit 60,000 miles and some time after that my Osx light came on. i replaced sensor and its still on. i have no muffler but that wouldn't affect it at all.
new timing belt and water pump.
any info would be appreciated. i have searched and cant find anything. been like this for about 3 months. also disconnected that battery over night.

There's a little box in the rain tray that connects to the speedo cable. Press the reset button on that box. It's purely related to the amount of miles on the car.

Actually, that box is in front of the firewall, directly behind the coolant bottle.
To reset the box:
Displace the coolant bottle - wiggle/pull straight up
Locate the box on the speedometer cable
Depress the reset button with a pen - it should click when reset
Replace coolant bottle
Drink

As an FYI, that light is merely a mileage counter that comes on approximately every 50K miles and cannot be reset until it triggers. It means nothing more than "Check the O2 sensor operation".

wow that was easy . worked. why was it so hard to find this information. i couldn't find it in both my repair manuals . or searching online. Thanks.

Because it's one of those, "Light came on, you need to bring it into the dealer so we can overprice the sensor and installation." things. Plus alot of people don't even know about it.

blast from the past.....my noob ass needs help.

86 jetta 8v...

this light came on - OXS or OSX...(not looking at it at the moment)
