I picked up a non-running 91 9a passat a few months back. The majority of the problem came back to the alternator not receiving signal to kick on, and a faulty coolant temp sensor.
Now I'm dailying the car, and it has some weird ticks.
Start up: The idle seems to have stages. Most of the time the car cranks and fires up to ~800 rpm then sputters for a few seconds, then smooths out to ~1100 rpm. Sometimes it seems to be missing at idle.
Driving: I'm getting around 13 MPG
Key Off: The car wants to keep running after I turn the key off! Sometimes it shuts right off, sometimes it sputters for up to 3 full seconds, and everywhere in-between. What gives?
