A lot of Gear Stick Play

I have a 1991 Golf GL (75k). I noticed the other day that all of a sudden there is a TON of play in my gear shifter. In neutral I can move it up and down 3-4in. There's also 1-2in play when I'm in any gear.

Any ideas what it could be?

seriously though you probably stretched your linkage key.

Check the linkages up front From the shifter shaft all the way through to the trans) and have a good look in the shifter box. if you can't find a missing / broken linkage or bushing and the ball on your relay shaft is good, then start looking for a new trans.

I'll check the linkage and stop by my VW dealership and see if they have a diagram of the gear shifter assembly; it'll give me an idea if anything is missing or broken (out of place).

I'll get that 3rd cylinder checked out too

My money is on the little ball on el relay shaft. :thumbup:

This should help get you started. Have somebody sit in your car while you watch the linkage from the engine bay. You'll see the slop somewhere (probably in a lot of places).

my guess is his relay shaft ball's outer piece has fallen off, so he's left with only the splined plastic bit. so yes, that kit will fix the issue.

while he's at it, a general mk2 linkage refresh kit is always a good idea. every time i refresh the linkage on an 020 car, i just drop the exhaust and replace everything that's consumable.

Yea, the only issue is that if he gets a general kit, he will have doubles of a lot of parts. There is really only two other bushings not in that kit that wear out.
