Unless you're an audiophile or getting an awesome sound system (which by your comments you are neither) I wouldn't worry about soundproofing your doors.
 
I cut my own spacers from MDF. 3/4'' mdf board. It took 2 rings on each speaker to give me enough clearence. I can take a pic when I get home from work.

well said but I spent almost a lot of $$$ on the equipment so I want to make sure that it all sounds good. I know a decent amount about car stereo. this is my first setup in a VW. GOtta ask questions!

You can order the sound deadening mats online for fairly cheap and install them yourself. Pretty sure they just stick to the door skin. It can never hurt, and may stop some rattles.
yeah Im ordering a set of adapters online right now. just deciding on the depth they need to be. i read some people dont use them at all. depending on the speaker. I have been peiceing this together for months now. could had some nice coils! i just want them in now!!!:beer:
