Do you think it would be bad to change the wheels and keep everything else? The more and more I think about it the more I want to keep the original paint
Change the wheels if you'd like (it's your car, make it yours), but keep the original wheels... i.e. don't get rid of those matching Avuses/Snowflakes. If you ever sell the car, put the original wheels back on it; you'll then get more money for the car because that well-kept, relatively rare Wolfsburg Edition would be sold in all original condition (provided it still has a gray top by then).

Hey i'm new too. Ive been obsessing over cabbys for awhile. I finally got up the courage today to go knock on some random mans door and ask if I could buy his personal car off of him. He said yes! Woo! Im actually going to be doing the same color scheme to this one! Mines a '85 5 speed!

hey man, no problem. just keep the pics comin everybody and ill be happy.
i just got a box of goodies from the guy i bought mine from, it had some karmann badges, the door handles with chrome inserts and bentley guide too

From all appearances, that is a really nice find... :)

also if I have the original owners manual do I need to buy a bentley???
Yes, for the orginal owners manual really only covers some very basic things. The Bentley goes into far more depth on just about every nook and cranny of your car. The difference between the two is much like comparing a brochure to an in-depth book. ;)

Just found this one for under $20 when I did a quick search on eBay (used but perhaps better than $45 or $50 for a new one if the budget is tight):

YES!... i would be lost without mine, the day i put 4 tires on mine and a battery, i headed out for a cruise and lost 3rd 4th 5th and reverse... 5 minutes after i pulled out of the garage. but i whipped out the bentley, ordered a shift linkage rebuild kit. the linkage diagram and every detail is engraved into my skull now :) cant wait to get the kit on friday

Well my shift linkage rebuild kit should be at my door today, I was exploring the linkage last night and noticed I was missing the short selector rod that let's you run between the reverse 1st 3rd and 5th slots

OMG that is simply one of the best, more rare color combos around. Please please please keep the paint, the interior, and the wheels. Like others have said, keep the original Avus wheels, perhaps some BBSs or something else a little more rare are in order - oh, then color match them too! Also, not a big deal to tastefully lower it.

At the end of the day, she's your car - do what makes you happy! But I love it as-is!

how do you post pics in a thread?
You'll have to first upload your images to a site such as Flickr or Photobucket (the image files can't be hosted within the forum). Once you've done that (just make sure they're not huge, probably no more than somewhere between 800 to 1024 pixels on the long side, unless you reeeeally want folks to cuss when they open your thread... ;) ), grab the image code and insert it in your post here. The image code is obvious on Photobucket (it will have

). On Flickr, simply use the drop-down "Share" button above your photos (you can upload any size up to ginormous on Flickr, then use your choice of sizes from the "share" menu). :)

Thanks, I'll give it a shot. On another note, I got my likage rebuild done today, it was a complete pain and I havd to retrofit a bushing into the oem shiftrod bearing mount. I have to take it back out and tweak it more tomorrow but for now I'm ony missing 4th and 5th! Got reverse and 3rd back again, so I'm happy. No more pushing it out of parking spots.
