I was talking with a few friends the other day, one a car guy and the other not. We all agreed that nothing out right now is a must have, all the styling is awful, and the damned things cost too much.

My B5 is getting old, I drive whatever I want for the most part (within reason) and I see no current cars I would want to replace her if something happened.

Am I the only one that would rather refresh an old car than buy a new one?

No. The Mustang has been boring to me since the 2005 gen, and now GM is even more boring now that Pontiac is gone. I do like some new cars though (Prius, Encore) but not a lot. That said, 67-69 Camaros are boring to me too.

I agree that many new cars do absolutely nothing for me. However, there are still several new cars I would be happy to buy.

Audi has great styling for example... Again many new cars are ugly and boring, but not all. The German cars are doing the best job right now. They are very few Japanese cars I want.

I can go to BMW's, Audi or Merc website and would be all over basically any of the M cars, S line Audi's or AMG Mercedes.

I agree - there isn't a single new car, that I find interesting in my price range - under $30k. I don't like the Mini anymore, the Abarth is ok, but not really, GTi is a bit boring, maybe the Focus ST, but still can't do it, and i need a rear seat for a baby, so two seaters are out.
Used luxury cars under $30k are not very exiting either - they are just too similar to each other.
I'll just keep on driving my old stuff.

Completely agree, the mk6's don't do it for me, and the golf 7 is basically the same thing. New audi's you can barely tell the difference between. I personally don't like new bmw's, only older models. I've seen a few new mercedes that are sweet but nothing that really catches my eye. I test drove a mini once before buying the golf, hit my head on the window when I took a turn in 2nd gear, too cramped. And lambo's and ferrari's have looked the same since I was a tot, besides they're a waste of money. I'll stick with mk4's and b5's until something classic, and iconic comes out again.

I was thinking what to buy next - haven't bought anything since 2009, and I think I will go for the 2014 Transit Connect - the wagon version ( depending on what engine it will have in the US). This or another used XJ/XF Jag.

I don't share this sentiment at all, but I know I'm in the minority.

Perhaps I don't have enough exposure to the classics, and cars produced prior to 1990.

But new cars are anything but boring, and IMO the new tech makes them more enjoyable to drive and not less.

Many TCLers and even many non-enthusiasts share your sentiment. Me? I am a fan of innovation. So while I have an appreciation for older cars and classic designs, I'm not limited in what appeals to me.

As a gay man, I'd have thought you'd have a line on buying, or really renting, one of these.
I've had a few test drives. Nothing worth putting in my stable.

This is EXACTLY how I feel right now.

No diesel, no care.
I agree with you. These things are a awesome utility/runabout. Like the old VW Buses with a Westy package

I agree BUT all this new tech is more weight and more numb.
I do like push button start, NAV in dash, and ESP. But all the other stuff is boring.

Not to get deep or anything, but I think that is the natural progression of products like automobiles in maturing markets like ours.

Our society has matured/evolved along with the car such that... today... IMHO... most everything... including the most basic service so much of our needs and come so loaded with features (due to regs or demand/fashion) that most consumers are left... desireless? We have almost everything we NEED in a car and I'm hard pressed to think that we're in the same boat in terms of WANT, too.

The car format/architecture has been evolving for decades now and short of the advent of powertrain advances like hybrids and EVs... there is little in terms of revolutionary steps. Basically we're near the pinnacle of what cars can be... especially even the lowliest car in our market.

We're spoiled and thus the passion have left us. I think if you were an up and coming consumer in an emerging market like China... things would be different. Can you imagine coming from a bike to motorbike to car in as short as your lifetime? Many here are probably too young to even remember what the first subcompacts were like in this market. Or even when an F-150 has partially-exposed door metal inside.

I miss by old 91 Civic Si for its rawness, simplicity, and pure fun... all wrapped up in a practical and affordable package. But I also know that as much as I liked it... the 4k rpm at highway speeds today would make me  in my old age (42 :p). But given the choices today... I'd buy it again if I could.

I think my boredom in cars is what drove me to bicycles recently.

.
1.6 Ecoboost will be available, so not as bad as they are now. I think the lack of manual transmission will be more of a problem for me .

I have the current diesel one ( in EU), and i agree - it fits the car perfectly, but what can you do:(

There are some interesting cars out there, imo, even if I don't care for all of them. The Beetle, the 500 Abarth (the commercials alone made the car worth launching, imo), the FR-S/BRZ, the Mini Roadster/Coupe, etc.

My fascination with antique, classic, and historical automobiles has subsumed nearly all remaining interest I have in new cars. The fact that I find new cars almost unendurably boring makes it easier.:)
