Money BETTER spent on an exhaust than springs !
Not really I'd rather have the springs. Vw/Audi has a habit of doing tsb's rather then recalls or straight out warranty.

Knowing they aknowledge the problem worries me so I would want the springs for maximum performance and long term reliability

i have the full apr exhaust with k04 and i still have misfires i upgraded the spark plugs and coilpacks. im taking my k04 off putting it on my gfs 2010 jetta wolfsburg and im going stage 3. been having misfires since march and im tired of it. shoulda just went with stage 3 in the first place

Wish I could afford to swap my K04 to the S3..

Couple questions for Arin -

So what are the specs on the detuned software? WHP?
So for the unlucky guys with bad valve springs and just wanted to run a K04 with stock exhaust system (yeah, I know I am lame like that) will that be an issue with detuned software?
And if you have the "good" valve springs, can you run the stock dp and not run into mis-fire issues?

Thank you.
I don't have the exact specs on the reduced out put file. I'm also not confident the full exhaust system would fix the problem either. And as far as the stock DP goes, I really don't know yet.

This is a frustrating situation for the GLI/CC/Passat guys. Basically if we want to run a K04 and fully enjoy it, we need to spend another $1K or so and upgrade the springs.

I'm strongly considering going back to stage 2 because IMHO, I'm not sure it's worth having the money invested in the K04 if you can't fully enjoy it. Not to mention that if your car has the "BAD" springs, it may not be safe to be pushing the car like that in the higher RPMs.

Background:

In all cases we’ve seen these problems will not exist at stock output levels, or even at Stage 1 or 2 power levels due to lower exhaust backpressure.

The issues these vehicles have faced are very similar to one existing on some Audi S3 and TTS vehicles in the past. Ultimately it was determined by Audi the valve springs were weak enough to cause issues even on completely stock vehicles, so Audi released a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) advising dealerships how to replace the problematic parts.

I apologize for being slow here... it's a Monday. Is this an issue with stock 2.0T cars, and APR is the fix? Or is this an issue with APR modded cars, and APR has a fix?

It's a potential problem on any TSI-engined car regardless of software, but is seems to be common to the Mk6 GLI and CC so far. Not all cars have the weaker exhaust valve springs, so the only way to know is to try and do a visual check as shown above, through removing the PCV plate.

The problem is in the weaker valve springs combined with the increase in back pressure seen with higher power / flow modifications, most commonly the K04 equipped cars. We have a K04 equipped CC with this problem and it only manifests itself in 4th and 5th gear near 5000rpm or higher, so depending on how you drive, even with the weaker springs and a K04 the problem might not occur. Then again it may - it's pretty much case by case.

Stock it would be rare to see this issue, stage 1, unlikely, stage 2, unlikely but possible, K04, possible / most likely, Stage 3/3+ unlikely due to significantly higher flow through the exhaust turbine and there for less back pressure at the head.

Based on our experience with TSI motors and the parts pricing, it would be around $700 parts and labor to complete the "upgraded OE" exhaust valve spring upgrade, or $1100~ parts and labor to install the Supertech / I.E. complete titanium valve spring kit.

Hope that helps - let me know if

The issues is occurring on some highly tuned K04 turbocharged GLIs and we are discussing the cause and a solution.
...is it more of an issue for early Passat, CC, and GLI's ie 2012...and the newer 2013+ GLI's Passats and CC, have the upgraded springs...or is it just random from car to car?

I have a 2013 GLI, purchased 5 weeks ago. Car has a stutter/misfire between 2000-3000 rpm, while under load. It mostly happens in D while putting load on the motor. If i have it in S or manual, I can get high in the rev range where the motor is not under load. Mods are Neuspeed Pflow and APR stage 1.

Mec--Were your problems present before or after your upgrades? I was hoping to trade up in April-ish, but I'm not sure how I feel about having to disassemble a new car to see if it will drive properly or not.

Why has VW not acknowledged this issue yet if APR has already found the cause? Doesn't really sound like APR's job to find out what VW did wrong at the factory... just another reason to keep my VR.

Never had a problem before the tune. Every time I switch to 93 octane, I can make the stutter/misfire happen, on command. If I switch to stock, I don't feel it at all. Not even a faint stutter. It's so dangerous when getting on the highway. If I hit the gas, the car falls flat on its face, while the diverter valve goes off, then it pushes through.
