So what would it take to fix this other than a full flush of the fuel system? Maybe new plugs and injectors. I cant see that costing a grand per car.
Would need a full fuel system drain, and flush, new plugs, they will likely do an oil change. That right there, at dealer prices is likely near a grand right there. (Keeping in mind, prices are in canadian funny money)

It'll pooch o2 sensors in a very short period of time. Could destroy the catalytic convertor. Those can be big ticket items too.

For laughs, I checked how much injectors are for my car. They come in at a cool $180 USD each, and my car takes 6. If it ate my injectors, well, I'm clearing a grand BEFORE book time for an injector job.

I easily believe a grand a car minimum.

I thought diesel pumps dont fit into gas filler necks?
The tanker truck filled the actual underground gas storage tank with diesel, so the customers were pumping from the gas pump, but there was diesel coming out of it.

I'm sure there was some gas left in there, which would explain some vehicles continuing to run fine for a while...between the gas in that storage tank mixed with the new diesel, and the gas in the customer's tanks before filling up, it may be enough to keep less picky engines running acceptably well.

That's really unfortunate. But it's worse to but gasoline in a diesel motor, so it could have been a lot worse. My ex put diesel in her gas truck...she had over half a tank of gas in it already though. Ran funny for a couple days. Her Dad is a mechanic and just drained the tank and changed the oil. No issues after that.

As much as I believe this because most people are dumb when it comes to their cars, I'm sure someone had to smell the diesel once it started flowing.

Too bad a diesel owner didn't catch on because they could have been filling up for gas prices instead of diesel prices.

Diesel is generally cheaper than gas up here in igloo land

I always thought diesel in gas was much worse and could even cause catastrophic carnage from detonation. Some intentionally run a little petrol in diesels in frigid climates after all.
