MK IV 1.8 turbo early 2005 Jetta GLI. Any bright ideas on why this might happen. The check engine light is on. I'm borrowing a scan tool that will hopefully tell me why the light is on. Anyone have any experience with these symptoms? It passed CA emissions with flying colors. Thanks.

Yes. Should there be a hiss when I open it? It's my wife's car so I'm not that in tune with it. My car has a hiss when I open the gas cap. It used to hiss on the VW and now it does not. A mechanic friend told me it may have a small pressure leak causing the check engine light to come on.

Alright all joking aside...

It is possible you have somthing wrong with the Evap System or the gascap is faulty and is releasing pressure. I would simply try a gascap off a diffrent car that "Hisses" and see if that fixes the problem.

My cap only hisses when my fuel is low and the pump has pulled air from the tank. I couldnt imagine any problems that would be caused from not hearing a hiss. Have you noticed a fuel leak?
No. No odor of fuel. No drips but I have not had a chance to crawl under it yet. It does not hiss when low either. I guess I'll just see what the scan tool tells me. I was hoping someone might have had a similar situation and could point me in a possible direction.

I figured you were joking. :)
I thought of that too but they test the cap for CA emissions and it passed as holding pressure.

Defonaly get It scaned with Vag-Com

That will pinpoint the problem for you. You might have a busted solenoid in the EVAP system. thats just stuck open causing all the pressure to basicly get drawn into the engine.

Still nothing thats going to implode the car in a ball of fire. But If you are hellbent on fixing it you seem to be on the right track

I'm not overly concerned as it runs fine. It's just annoying to see that light on when it's the newest car I own and my Z has 270XXX miles and has no light on. :p

Haha I hear ya. Its common for these cars to "Run Fine" and have a dash that looks like a christmass tree from all the lights on. Hahah. Like i said though if you get it scanned with Vag-Com or have it scanned at the dealership it will tell you exactly why its showing the engine light. Dont just get it scanned with a generic scanner those things are hit or miss and dont give the full detail of what the problem is usualy.

Cheers

Yeah. I hear you. My 86 Jetta had a perpetual red dot in the center of the dash. Thanks for the info. I figured any old scan tool would work. A friend has one for their MKIV. Not sure of the brand though.

I guess, if for no other reason, I could get the tool just to turn the light off every week. :D
