Not dead, but after 11 years and 174,000 good miles, it was no longer a machine for infinite quests.
I had an extremely good run with my 2002 Golf GL. As a 2.0 liter, manual transmission car, it had none of the major problem areas of the other Mk IV's. No coil packs, no electric windows, and no sunroof ( hence my nome de plume - MaxHeadroom.) My big gripe with the car was that someone stole the front VW emblem, and Volkswagen decided that you could only replace it by buying a complete new grill for $400 USD.
I have been amazed at how well the car was thought-out and constructed. The only mods I felt it needed were Koni Sport Yellows, Neuspeed Softsport springs and Borbet 17in alloys. Maintenance was normal except for 2 drivers side seat buckle replacements, and air conditioning parts. At the end, the car still had the original exhaust system, clutch, and believe it or not, the original brakes!
Knowing it would take more money than was practical to keep it going, I traded in my old Golf for a new Golf. So to paraphrase Bill Shakespeare once again - Parting is ....SWEEET!
