Just in the past few months my car has developed a really annoying problem. Anytime it rains significantly it either has a really hard time starting or just won't start at all. It turns over fine, just won't start. However, the next day once it stops raining, it starts just fine. Plus, seeing how its been raining here in CT for the past two weeks straight this problem is becoming a real nuisance. I know of a couple other people with the same problem on their MK3's. Any insight into this problem would be greatly appreciated.

Try spraying water with a spray bottle on the coilpack/plug wires and check if they arce(sp?) if they light up like a xmas tree, you'll need to replace the plug wires.

Yup...I have the same problem. My problem is I have an arching problem between the plug wires and distributor.
Someday I'll replace them. If this damn rain would stop, it wouldn't be such a problem.

Thanks for the help. I had called LanganVW and they said they hadn't heard of it. I love how stupid they are.
Anyway, I hear ya about the rain. It's been raining so much here I'm beginning to think I'm in Seattle. If it would just stop raining I wouldn't have this problem.

They're not stupid they'r playing dumb so VW doesn't have to be liable for a fugazzi product. Beru makes the part and it's a POS, most of us have the same problem one point in our lives with the cracking and arching. http://****************.com/smile/emthdown.gif

My 2.0 was doing that for about a year. Even moisture from fog would keep the car from starting. I replaced my spark plug wires with another set of OEM...never happend since. Hope this helps

I had the same problem - the coils have a tendency to get very tiny cracks, and if any moisture gets inside, it won't start until it dries.. if that's your issue, be sure to replace it with vw oem, there are a few cheaper imitations out there that suck..

Re: (candela!)

well it mostly happens with the 2.0's which i have myself and encountered the same problem if not worse.. Stalling on the van wyck express way. Get the distri, and sparks done and you should be fine. Like the rest of them said. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Re: (becones)

no, the VRs have this problem more than 2.0s do. Mainly with the coilpack.
I had this problem start about 2 years ago, and the dealer said my plug wires were arcing. I went home, replaced my plugs, wires, cap and rotor...and the problem persisted. Infrequently enough that I just let it go for a while. Then I bought some WD-40 and sprayed it on the coilpack once when it stalled out...voila. Problem found. Dealerships are retarded.

Re: Anyone else have problems with car starting in the rain?? (VWJettaK2)

use a hairdryer homey!!
5 minutes of using it on the dist. cap, and all lines connecting it and your car will start fine...
of course this is temp. fix...

I replaced my wires and it still does it...my coilpack is cracked. The cheap and easy way is to zip-tie a plastic baggie around the whole coilpack so moisture cannot get in. Looks ghetto, but it beats spending $140 or however much those coilpacks go for now. Good luck!
