I daily drive the most car enthusiast unfriendly car. It has no steering feel, no clutch, and a boat suspension. It puts me to sleep just driving the thing. It's a car for people who don't want to drive from place to place. My grandma would probably love driving this thing.

It's a 2009 Lexus es350. It's even boring to look at the thing.

In my self defense, it was my wife's old car. I would have never bought that thing myself. Good thing I still have my Porsche cayman for all the fun!!

I'm simply interested in learning about why car enthusiasts own "boring" cars.
What is there to learn? Most people have to make compromises in life. Seems pretty obvious to me...

Some day I'll have room for a third "fun" car. But for now- wife needs to be able to drive both cars so we have automatics and we wanted something larger for travel/hauling but she doesn't want to drive it so I do.

But I honestly enjoy my Outback.

I owned this before my GTI..

Ford Fuktus by Ryan Hainstock, on Flickr

Slow as dog piss in a straight line. What most people would call ugly. Interior was nothing special, but to be fair I've seen newer cars with worse interiors.

BUT.. it was reliable. (2.0 DOHC Zetec) and was fun in the corners (independent rear suspension for mad tyte cornering brah!) It was cheap on insurance, even though my GTI is cheaper. And it got relatively decent gas mileage. I could easily hit 30mpg highway when I wanted to. Not bad for a 10+ year old car. The aftermarket is also pretty abundant. So there's a decent amount of choices modification-wise.
Nice Fuktus  I have a similar story.

Owned this

Then this happened

Ended up being a total loss (I was at fault :() and I switched to this.

I miss that Focus and would choose it over the Jetta any day of the week.

But to answer the original question I own a boring car because I'm poor

because i need a car that's reliable, has a/c, good gas mileage, and doesn't make me look like supporting cast for the Fast and the Furious while i'm on the job.

i have project cars and toys for all that, and i'd rather not have to drive them every day.
What if I told you you could have a car that isn't boring and meets all of your requirements?!

I don't understand all these people that say they drive a boring car cause its reliable. My 2013 GTI is far from boring, extremely reliable, comfortable and fuel efficient. Also the safety rating on these is great! The payments aren't too bad either. If you want it to be more reliable and practical then don't modify it. It is still a very fun, safe, practical and fuel efficient vehicle.

I just bought a home and have no money for a cooler car. I am now brainwashing myself into loving my GTI--this may take some time.
I'm in a similar position and was wondering if the GTI counted as a boring car?

There is also the wife factor...... so, the car must be "wife approved"

A lot of people can't stick to that suggestion w/'fun' cars and need to escape from having that option.

Also, a lot of people don't want the payment that comes w/a new car.

But, I agree with you. I spent the $ to buy my car new because of all the reasons you gave for getting a new GTI.

There are plenty of cars out there that are practical and exciting for less than $30K new well-equipped. I'm thinking of the Focus/Fiesta ST, MS3, Civic Si, GTI right off the bat. But that $3-500/mo payment is a lot for some people to swallow.

is this the part where you try and pass your crappy VW as "meeting all the requirements?"

lawlz.

you must have not read the part about my "project" and "toy" cars.

the enthusiast part about me isn't about driving a compromise (especially not one as terrible as your cute little GTI). it's about turning wrenches on something and actually having fun.

i am a firm believer in using the right tools for the job. in that respect, each vehicle has its purpose.

the "boring" car is simply an appliance used to transport me in a comfortable manner to, from work and anything related thereof.

to me, your GTI is boring. so it meets none of the criteria i have in mind when it comes to "exciting" or being an "enthusiast."

your car is an appliance.... but if that's all the fun you want in your driving experience, have at it.

you cannot assume that your completely subjective opinion about your GTI will be shared by anyone else when it comes to their cars.

i'm certain that for many people (even ones who have responded to this thread) a VW is their "boring" car, and the "fun" thing is something completely different.

congratulations on finding excitement in that.

I own a boring car (MY2007 Hyundai Accent) because of Canadian winter. Even if i am careful and fully prepare (example: winter tire), the chance having accidents in Canada winter are still very high. Mainly because there are so many unprepared drivers driving around. (bad tire, drive like summer, u turn/cutting more than 2 lanes anywhere/anytime, follow too close, too fast...) It just not worth to drive nice car in winter here.

Haha nice. I would never take my old Focus over my GTI. This thing is so much more fun.

This is NOT meant to be judgmental (my car is pleasant enough, but is boring compared with a 911, S2K, BR-Z, or Miata).

I'm simply interested in learning about why car enthusiasts own "boring" cars.
Not sure if this has been covered....but did you really put a 911 in the same category as a br-z and miata? :what:

Just so you know, my whole post wasn't directed towards you. Like I said, "all of these people" as in most of the people in this thread, as in, not just you

I drive a boring car (2009 VW Jetta 2.5) because I wanted something comfortable with reasonable gas mileage and reliability. My motoring excitement comes from riding motorcycles and admiring cars way out of my league. For the 3000 miles per year that a motorcycle isn't my preferred vehicle, a rolling couch is perfect.
