Hi Guys,

My engine light is on because I need to tighten this bolt somehow. I googled this picture but I still can't locate it anywhere. Do I need to remove the intake manifold to get to this bolt? is it at the front or the back of the engine?

Please advice

Thanks:wave:C:\Documents and Settings\sstevenus\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.Outlook\JCHZB3C6

umm, first off, no pics are showing. just an fyi, preview post before posting, will let you know if your pic attached. I would just get a photobucket or other similar pic hosting service.

now to your problem. i know of 2 knock sensors, both on front of engine, directly underneath the intake manifold, where it connects to the head/block. you don't need to take off the manifold, and depending on the size of your limbs, you may not need to take anything off.

first one, from passenger side, would be roughly below injector 1-2 (from left), second one would be a couple inches to the right, closer towards injector 4.

You should be able to reach with long extension (or flex/u-joint). find out the torque specs first.

just noticed you have an 02 gti. my engine is awp, therefore it may not apply to your engine 100%, but i can't imagine it would be too different between all the 1.8t's. Just get a good flash light and you should be able to see at least one of them when looking through the top of manifold/fuel rail

You can definitely get to it without taking off the IM.

Worse case, I would unbolt the bracket between the IM and rad; it should only be two allen bolts IIRC.

I would be careful around the PCV lines. They get very brittle with age.

so if you have this picture, then you know where it is, what is the question? you can see the t-stat opening to the left of it, so look for the hose coming off the radiator and to that housing then locate the bolt. there is also another on on the far driver side front of the engine. it's definitely easier to do this with the intake manifold off if you haven't done any engine deletes.
