I truly feel that people that can appreciate the R for what it actually is are few and far between.
You're right, many people buy the 'luxury' name as a status symbol for whatever reason. IMHO the Golf R is more nicely appointed than many of the 'luxury' brands in this price point.
Then there are others who look solely at the on-paper performance numbers to make their decision. Of these, how many are actually purchasing their cars with the primary intent to race? It's all about bragging rights of another sort.
I wanted a car that to me looked beautiful, was functional day-to-day, well equipped, and one that I felt 'connected' with man-to-machine.
I don't have the need to drop brand names at cocktail parties, I don't hang out at the local Dairy Queen, revving my engine and street racing. I'm not into 16 year old girls, nor am I interested in money-hungry women.
The Golf R/R32 owner is often one of discernable taste, modesty, and an enjoyment of the experience.
