I can fix that easily by electrical tape on the cap so it won't scratch

It goes the other way, the gas cap sits on the outside of the gas cap, not the inside.

Thanks for the idea! I'll be doing this to a couple of my other cars.

Hanging it by its built in notches, as pictured above and as explained in my Owner's Manual has been working fine for my VW.

anyone actually find a cap with a peg so you can hang your cap while pumping. Seems kinda retarded that the stand is there but it's completely useless

figure 4 of page 34 in section 3.3 of the Tips and Advice column in my '10 GTI manual says and has a photo of placing the cap on the gas cap door. I've always done it and never worried about it. Paint is fine. :thumbup:

I let mine hang by the cord. Who gives a **** :sly: paint is fine in that area, and if I have a few tiny scratches that I can't see they will buff out done the road. It's a gti, not a god damn Ferrari.
