You could dynamat the floor and the trunk to cure the drone. Everything comes apart very easily. If I was going to drive one every day I'd do it.

No drinks in the console! You can stash bottled drinks in the space between the seat bolsters at your left hip.
I said no drinks, but...you can see how far that got.

I want to dynamat very badly. I drive 20k a year between going to and from work, driving to my gf's house, and visiting my parents, so it's definitely a must. I'll probably try and find someone to do it for me, because since it's my only car I can't really afford any down time. I know if I did it myself it would take me days and days.

 That's what I get for skimming this thread while on the phone

That price is kind of crazy though, I sold my C6 for $3k less than that and I think the C6 is a much better all-around car, although my C6 had twice the miles

Maybe one of these days if I can get a really good deal I'll end up with an S2000, it's a really appealing car but not worth it for me at that price
It's not a crazy price. It may not be worth it to you, but it's worth it to a lot of other people. I'll let you take it for a spin if you reciprocate with your gallardo ;) Once you drive it you will be hooked I promise. The interior is very well laid out, it looks great, sounds awesome, the engine begs to rev, and it corners on a dime. It's an amazing car.

And as an aside, your vette sold for a lower price because the market is saturated with them. There are NOT very many s2000's on the market and they are no longer produced. The market share that the s2000 has is not really filled by any other car, even today. All these things make it very desirable. And don't forget its reliability!

I can only compare the s2000 to my c5 z06, and all around, I prefer te s2000. I love the tight, minimalist interior and free reving Honda engine. If I go on a long drive, I prefer the s2000.

I would like to sell the c5z and upgrade to a c6z though...
I've never been in a vette but....

I love my s2000 :)

I'm jealous!

...but maybe not...I may be picking up some old, v8 powered, roofless, English iron Wednesday. ;)

Want to race?
No racing from me :) I'd probably lose lol

I'm thinking TR-8, but it could be an MGB with a swapped GT-V8 engine (or similar) or a B GT-V8 with a swapped body.

Sorry, no more hijacking.

Congrats on graduating and the purchase!

On what subject was your thesis?

I'm a tightwad, as my father grew up in the depression and imparted that philosophy onto me, but if I could justify a 2-seater late model car, this would be on the very, very short list. I'd have to get a white one (and paint/wrap the rockers red), though. I love Japanese cars in their classic racing colors as much as German sports cars in silver/black and American ones in blue/white. Yeah, that's the stuff. :)

Man, do I love those things.

I really appreciate a car so well designed that you make the aftermarket companies really have to do their homework if their parts are going to be an actual improvement!
My thesis was on permanent supportive housing in an evolving downtown Los Angeles. The basis of my thesis was you can solve homelessness by eliminating "drug free" restrictions and providing permanent housing through section 8 vouchers to chronically homeless individuals. Permanent supportive housing has a 90% success rate of keeping chronically homeless individuals housed over a span of 5 years, and has a 85% success rate of helping residents kick drug habits and stay clean. The reason is if you house someone then they have somewhere to stay away from bad influences, and are able to get clean and stay clean. My model for permanent supportive housing included social services and community activities such as urban farming (basically throwing some veggies on top of a roof- people ate it up but in all honesty it probably doesn't work well in real life) so they have something to do instead of wandering around on the streets. I already moved my thesis onto my external hard drive, but if I get a chance tomorrow I'll post a few pictures if you're interested.

I know what you mean about being a tightwad. I've lived off of macaroni and cheese and ramen to save up the 9k that I put down. It felt really good :)
The way I see it, there are two times in life to have a car that isn't practical. When you're young with no obligations, and when you're old with no obligations. It's hard to have it in the middle.

This is correct. I miss my old one. It could always bring a smile to my face. s2000s are fantastic, and definitely a future classic.
Not really a future classic, I think they already are in a lot of ways. When I was showing the car to some family members who aren't car savvy, they thought it was brand new.

Excellent choice, OP.

I drove my first AP2 a few years ago, and all I did was idle it around the parking lot but I could still tell it was something special. When I was looking to get out of the Fiat, a local Honda dealer had TWO silver AP2s on trade that were listed at $18K with less than 50K miles. That was my first chance to really wind one out and it was surreal. Loud, noisy, raw, uncomfortable on harsh bumps...and the best car I've ever driven.

I just couldn't justify $18K in my current living situation so I had to settle for a girl's car with a revvy engine in it. Color me extremely jealous.

New thread coming Thursday, as long as the car pans out. I haven't seen it yet but it sounds like a winner.

I can honestly say on my previous two cars I didn't really do any maintenance. But tonight...

Before:

You can see how dirty the old air filter is.

New! I bought it from the dealership today after work. I found it on Honda's part website for $33 at the dealer, but when I called he quoted me $37. I told him I found it for $33, but he wasn't really hearing it... I went in anyway and he gave me the $33 price because they have a deal where they match any offer you get elsewhere.

This metal spring keeps it SUPER tight! It was pretty hard to pry out the filter.

Old filter.

I may have been able to get some more life out of it, but my brother took a look at it this weekend while he was inspecting the engine bay. He lost an engine due to a faulty air intake (engine ingested dirt and grime) so he's pretty paranoid. He told me to change it right away, so for $33 I have a new filter! I've never done much auto stuff myself I always have someone do it, but I saved some money and feel pretty good about it even though it was only a 10 minute thing.

Congrats again, on your new instant classic!

Nice first drive, too.

With that said I have no idea why people whine about the "lack of torque." I had no problems accelerating in 6th on the Grapevine going to L.A. (6.5% grade), there is plenty of passing power at 60-70mph on the freeway, and frankly the car is pretty darn fast.
That's actually pretty good, since the Grapevine is high enough for altitude to also be a factor on a normally-aspirated engine (-17% or something like that). But, yeah - the engine should rev sufficiently high @ ~65 mph for that not to be a problem - otherwise it would be very poorly geared. I am sure it's not turning at 1,800 rpm, like my TDI (which also loves the Grapevine - but that's probably the only thing it has in common with your new car...). ;)

s2ki has answers for every common issue. Searching via google gets you better results than using the search on the forum.

Heres the thread where I talked about worn top strikers -
http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthre...m/showthread.php?5972674-Light-freshening-of-my-S2000-ongoing-thread-lotsa-pics

Your car already has the newer version of the strikers but they can still wear quite a bit if the top on your car went up and down every day. If they are notched you can try switching them from side to side before buying a new pair. It only takes 2mm of wear to make a lot of wind noise through the header seal.

Funny that you mentioned that, because I was curious about the cabin filter so I looked up how to replace it. I couldn't for the life of me find it on S2Ki through the search, but once I went to google it was the first hit. I'll be doing that from now on.

I'll look through at the strikers. There is minimal wear on mine, well I'm guessing just based on looking at the paint. Barely any is worn off.

Very nice!

In terms of the s2000, I can honestly say that it is extremely loud even with a stock exhaust, and there is a lot of wind noise coming through the soft top. I have to pay attention to curbs, driveways, bumps, and uneven road surfaces now. The stereo leaves a lot to be desired. Did I mention that there's exhaust drone? (it's not as bad as it could be)
Yeah, I noticed that when I bought my MX-5. Even with the top and windows up, you can hear cars idling next to you, people on the sidewalk talking, etc. And at speed, you certainly hear the wind, but it's just par for the course with an open-top car, even when the top isn't open. I consider it an extra bit of situational awareness, which you need when your ass is 8" off the ground and you're eye-level with the rocker panels of all the brodozers around you. :)

Can I say, I'm a little jealous? Not only do you have more horsepower then me, you also get better gas mileage.:laugh:

 that color.

Right, I knew what I was getting into so no complaints from me. My girlfriend doesn't mind either, the wind noise makes her fall asleep.

The noise definitely helps knowing when cars are beside you with the top up, given the giant blindspot you have on the drivers side. I'm pretty good about noticing cars coming up from the side and know that they're there, but if someone merges into my blind spot I don't know unless I hear them/physically turn to look.

I didn't mean to suggest that you made a stupid decision. I'm personally a Corvette guy, but I definitely love the S2000. I was just surprised they're still selling for that much used, since the Corvette was significantly more expensive new

I would definitely be down to meet up and drive each other's cars, I've always wanted to drive an S2000. As long as we could find a nice safe place to do it. PM me if you have any ideas

Oh right of course and I didn't mean to make it come across that way either  but I think it's the same with a few other cars as well, where they have an extremely high residual value. Also keep in mind that with few exceptions, expensive cars fall in price faster especially when sold in high numbers, corvette being one of them.

I'll shoot you a PM
