Re: Need help with factory BOSE radio, it's on SAFE mode... (inovillo)

after you turn on your radio and it should say safe for 3 seconds then it should show the number 1000. use radio station preset button 1 to 4 to enter your 4 digit code. preset button 1 for the first digit, preset button 2 for the second digit etc. when you are done press the right side of the seek button (">") for longer than 2 seconds until you hear a signal. If it is correct your radio will come on.

let me know if it works

Re: Need help with factory BOSE radio, it's on SAFE mode... (another VW fan)

In my Bose manual, it says to press and hold the SEEK and <SCAN buttons simultaneosly until "1000" lights up in the display. Then use the station buttons 1 to 4 to input the code. 1 to input the first digit, 2 to input the second, and so on. After the code is entered, press and hold the SEEK and <SCAN buttons again until "SAFE" reappears.

Re: Need help with factory BOSE radio, it's on SAFE mode... (bento)

I knew how to do it in the regular radio from a 2.0L but not the Bose.
Bento, I'm gonna try to do that 2night as soon as I get home. I hope it works.
Thanks a lot guys !!! http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

I followed the steps noted by Bento and was able to enter the 4-digit code finally. After pressing SEEK and <SCAN the second time, SAFE flashed several times & is now displaying steadily on the radio. What is the next step?? Can anyone completely describe how this is done on a Bose system in a 97 GLX?

Re: Need help with factory BOSE radio, it's on SAFE mode... (Talareno)

Me too... I know..I thought it was a bit weird to ask for a way to break into a stereo... but now I find myself in the same situation... moved my 100% cherry 98 Jetta GLX VR6 from California to beautiful, and low crime Norway in the north of europe, and it got stolen. 6 months later it was found and I bought it back from the insurance company. Now I have a 99.5% vherry Jetta with a stereo in safe mode, and no books or codes. Yep, I have always kept my books in the car, as I have almost never driven it, living abroad for 6 years.
Anyway... I need to figure out how I can break into my own stereo... I have contacted Bose, and am awaiting a reply.
I'll keep you posted!

Can someone post a scanned image of the factory instructions needed to unlock a Bose radio in a 97 GLX? It would become a good resource for quite a few people.

The following is the exact text from the Bentley manual:

Successfully got 97 BOSE out of SAFE mode

Erik's instructions are not 100% accurate, they were not quite complete for the radio in my 97 GLX. I would add a few refining notes:
a) Simultaneously press SEEK and <SCAN (the lower of the SCAN buttons) until 1000 appears. There is no single SCAN button on my radio.
b) If the first digit of your code is 1, don't press the 1st preset key as then the default "1" disappears (and no "0" appears!), which I assume means the radio thinks you want "0" instead. A minor point but if you are in a hurry to input the code you make overlook this, I did.
c) Input the remaining 3 digits, if you go "too far", just keep pressing the appropriate preset button and it will start counting over from 0.
d) Then, again press SEEK and <SCAN simultaneously until there is a change in the display, then let go of the buttons, and after a few seconds, enjoy the music!

Talareno, thanks for the heads-up. Appreciate the clarification!
