it could but how bad are we talking? It is recommended to remove the check valve inside that rear hose that bolts to the turbo if you add a bsh pcv block off plate, this will prevent building crank case pressure. you could be losing oil in a few locations other then that valve. pull off the drivers side intercooler hose and see if it has oil in the tube

There is no block off plate. The car is stock.
Smoke is considerable, and oil loss is extreme...1 qt every 300 miles.
There IS oil in the intercooler lines, the current opinion is that the turbo seals are shot and the turbo has to be replaced.
I am just exhausting ALL other options before going down that road since the cost is considerable relative to other possibilities.
There are NO other leaks anywhere visible in the engine bay.

Have you run a compression check? For reference, my motor put out 195 psi in each cylinder at 133k miles. Doesn't seem to go through to more than a quart every oil change.

The PCV sytem in my 08 GTI failed at around 60,000 miles, initially a big poof of white smoke with minor oil leaking afterwards. Brought the car into the dealership for FREE repair as this is a recall item (assuming the recall work hasn't been performed on your car yet).

My compression is 170, 169, 174, 180 psi. Engine is at 89,000mi.
This figures are w/in the 'New" limits according to Bentley.

So I'm thinking my rings are fine.

My PCV recall was done. Additionally, I replaced my PCV valve again last month because it was bad.

Update to the update;

The oil consumptinon and smoking were not caused by the bad turbo.
Turbo was replaced but still eating oil at 1qt every 200 miles.

Update:

The oil consumptinon and smoking was caused by the bad turbo. The oil seals were shot.
When the old turbo was pulled off it was litterally full of oil, the air had to 'bubble ' and blow trough standing oil it was so full.

New turbo installed and after 300 miles all is good.
Glad to hear that turbo is working out for ya ;)

Any tips on the removal or install you would give to someone who hasn't done it before? Any tools or techniques?
