Hi guys. Just wanted to say hi to you all as i am finally the owner of a mk4. This is the 7th VW that i've owned so lets hope it stays around :p

And his little bro

The rabbit is currently not running and I've got mixed feelings about this whole car payment thing.

I've had the golf for a little over a month and i love it but its got 96k on the clock and i'm already trying to muster the balls up to do the timing belt myself. A shop quoted me $900 something for the job which is cheap but i'd rather save the money and do it for $300

The reason I'm really posting

I did buy the bentley for this car and i've been trying to read up on the shift linkage on this 02j transaxle but my shifter needs a little bit of adjustment and this new cable mechanism is confusing me.

The problem: Reverse is pretty damned difficult to get into. Its kind of a back and forth, back and forth motion with some deal of force. Even when i stop in a forward gear to stop the output shaft from moving.

I'd also like to point out that 5th gear has a slight difficulty getting out of gear when i come to a stop from highway speeds. I try to pull out of gear while im still moving which seems to help. If i've stopped, i have to pull pretty hard.

Both symptoms dont seem to be any better when the trans is hot. My daily 1 way commute is just under 30 miles so it has a chance to warm up for sure.

Edit: I should point out that i am comfortable with adjusting the linkage on 020 trannys and have done so on several of mine

I no longer have a garage and its getting ugly outside so a transmission oil flush will have to wait till next spring

Why oh why did i lock myself into this car payment for the next 5 years?! Oh yeah, cause this TDI is awesome!!

That is an awesome video and just what i needed! Thanks! It looks surprisingly easy to adjust. I still cant quite wrap my brain around how it works other than to compare it to the Mk3 self adjusting clutch cable (which i hated)

Just so you guys know im serious about diesel

Yeah I know I got screwed but ive been turned down by lots and lots of places and I was in desperate need of a reliable car.

If I only had a garage still, I'd keep my tons of crap cars and fix/rotate as I go.

Big city living sucks sometimes

I don't think the 13k is too far out of whack. Remember his car has less than 100k on it AND it's a TDI AND it's an '06 model year AND he bought from a dealership, not privately. You can't even find any mk4 TDI cars around here with less than 140k miles on them...

A quick check of my local C/L shows prices for similar years around 8k, and they have at least twice the mileage that OP's car has. Did he overpay? Most definitely, since they had him over a barrel because of his credit. But it isn't like the car is a $4,000 car either...it looks ridiculously clean and the low mileage on it is a plus.

I'm pretty sure it has rust/clear peeling under the hood/bumper bra and the splashguard...

I can handle the hatred but the interior is in perfect condition and I was unwilling to do my 60 mile daily commute in the 90 ford bronco II of mine as i was sure it would get me killed or fired.

KBB is $12,389 so i decided to let them bump it so i could get my hands on this one owner vehicle

No hard feelings. I'm just happy that i can trust a car for the first time in over 6 years
