So I've had my GTI for a little over 7 years, and it's time for a change. I love the car, but with around 300whp it has a bit of trouble putting the power to the front wheels. Instead of selling it for something else, I decided to step up my game and fix my drivetrain "issue". The swap will retain the current engine with a W58 Toyota transmission and E30 rear trailing arm. I will try to document everything as well as I can, but I tend to forget to take pictures once I get working. Anyways, I have the motor mounts done and the trans crossmember 90% there. I didn't take many pictures, but here's what I got.
Passenger mount drying:

In the car, don't mind all the welding slag, I got lazy and never cleaned it off:

Mounts in the car:

Bottom of the crossmember:

A couple of other pictures of the crossmember....I'm using 2x1.5 1/8 tubing to run to the bottom mount, with a boxing plate at the rocker and another across the floor support rail.

I should have the crossmember finished tomorrow night and then move on to the steering.

Love the longitudinal 16v instead of a monster motor. Can't wait!
I agree, I've seen a couple of rwd mk1s kicking around, but never with a vw motor. Besides, there was no reason to change the motor as it already makes plenty of power ;)

How about pics and info showing how the yota trans adapts to the 16v...what kind of clutch are you using? I can see a adaptor plate in the second pic......
I got it from a company out in Oregon called Acme Adapters, they make swap kits to put VW diesels into Suzuki Samari, Geo Trackers, and Toyota pickups. I bought the adapter plate, flywheel, and pilot adapter bushing. An off the shelf Toyota clutch will be used, probably an upgraded IS300 or Supra unit. I'm currently using an old stock clutch from my IS for mock up purposes. Here's a couple of pictures of the Acme parts:

Here's the flywheel, you can also see the pilot bushing pressed in:

This is gonna be Kool!

You might think about moving your trans support frame to the under side of the floor pan. You could tie it into the original frame and rocker supports. Looks like it's in the way for feet rite now.

I was thinking about that but it'll be much stronger this way, I'm also adding additional bracing to it that requires it to be above the floor. As far as feet, I can have my feet in front of the support and use the pedals without issue. It may not be comfortable at times, but this car hasn't been about comfort in a long time
