Hello everyone,

It's my first post here but I've been lurking for a little while now. To be honest my technical knowledge about cars is not that high in regards to problems and repairs. That is why I was compelled to post here.

I scanned my 2003 Jetta 1.8t with ~90k miles on it. It has been having a rough idle and the sound is noticeably louder during idling and acceleration. Also it smells of gas around and inside the car. There is also some sort of leak in the car that causes moisture to come into the car and even cause ice on the inside of the windshield.

I am away from home and my trusted dealer right now, and will be for a while, so I wanted to make sure I know what the problems are so I do not get ripped by the dealer.

Here are the scanned codes.

1. Engine
16795 - P0411 - Secondary Air Injections System (B2)-Incorrect Flow
16684 - P0300 - Random Misfire Detected-Any Cylinder
16685 - P0301 - Cylinder #1-Misfire Detected
17544 (found description online) - P1136 - Fuel Trim: Bank 1 (Add): System too Lean
16687 - P0303 - Cylinder #3-Misfire Detected
16686 - P0302 - Cylinder #2-Misfire Detected

3. SRS
00532 - P1746 - Transmission Control Module Relay-Supply Voltage (B+)
Malfunction Low Battery or Bad Ground
P1750 - Supply Voltage (B+)

Thank You for letting me post my car issue here.

This literally exactly the same issue i am having besides the Secondary air injection, system to lean, and the srs. Even down to the Ice on my windshield and sunroof!(but i figure that is from snow being tracked in the car, evaporating, then refreezing over night). Hopefully someone will help us out.

The ice/moisture issue is so annoying! I wonder if that is contributing to any of the cylinders misfiring. I had the cylinder misfire issue before along with the moisture and ice on the inside. Took it to my mechanic and he replaced the coils. Now the cylinder(s) misfire again about 6 months later.

My sunroof is actually broken but has been closed shut. I guess it could be a clog of the sunroof drain that causes the moisture. This issue has been happening for a couple years now, but usually in the winter. The inside always seems humid. I checked under my mats 2 weeks ago and they were all wet. You should maybe check yours out in case! I took them all out and dried them out and used a wet-vac in the car. Now it has been a little better but the moisture has come back. So there is definitely an ongoing leak or something.

Do you both have sunroofs? Sounds like you both have a drain clogged somewhere. As for the misfire, is the timing correct, and does only happen in wet conditions? Inspect the coil pack harness and make sure you are getting fuel to all cylinders.

The cylinder, I assume (remembering when the rough idle started), happened when I drove after a snow storm. There was snow on the roads and the engine sound seemed different.

I do not know how to go about inspecting the coils. I looked it up a little and I think I can learn but do you guys recommend me making repairs myself? How much would the typical repair cost be for the misfire issue?

Hows the car running presently? It's hard to tell without me being there. I have a feeling you have a cracked coil pack harness. In the dry, do you have the same problems?
Yeah once the rough idle and misfires started they never stopped. It's been dry and cold too. I drove 60 miles after the rough idle but at the time it didn't seem like a big issue. Basically right after that the engine sound got even louder. And that is when I pulled the codes. The engine sign has been on for months now but I believe the cylinder misfires just started maybe in the last couple weeks.

So not to be annoying but can anyone give me a a rough price estimate of what the repairs would cost? I guess I would expect a vacuum leak to be repaired along with replacing the coil pack (hopefully not the catalytic converter).

Clear the codes and see which ones come back. Since you are still running it might be just spark plugs. Take off the engine cover, remove the coil packs and see is your valve cover gasket is leaking onto the spark plugs. Plugs are really cheap so you might as well replace them anyways.
