LEDs on my shifter

I want yo put a system that reflects the position of my shifter. I've thought in a LED based system, and i want to put it where you put the hand, not in the base. I haven't seen this before so I ask you if somebody had tried something similar, it would help me.

Can you not tell what gear youre in? The idea sounds cool, and it would be nice to have while youre learning to drive stick, but cant you feel the shifter? I usually just use road/engine speed to tell what gear i am. If you have a weak car like mine, you can usually tell what gear youre in by tapping the throttle. If i tap it and the car actually accelerates, that means im prolly in third. First and second are for acceleration only.

These guys make one for their sequential shifter...maybe youc an buy just the led kit?

this is the schematics of what i'm going to do, it's like the bmw up there but it has one led for each gear, and it illuminates only if i'm using that gear. Now the problem is how to put it into the leather shift.
I've thought this:
1. cut the upper side of my shifter
2. make the upper side with plastic and paint it
3. make the circuit and integrate in the shifter
4. use +12v source
