Hi,

Some of you might have read my post about learning to build a MK1. Well I went to see a 83 GTI today and wanted to ask some question of you knowledgable folk before pulling the trigger on it.

The car is a black 83 GTI with a 5 speed manual. ODO reads just over 90,000. Interior was in very good condition with no tears in the seats (red) I did not see any cracks in the dash (also red). All the dials appeared to work fine. The passenger side triangular door window was taped closed and the seller mentioned that it needed a latch of some sort. One of the LEDs on the dash was on which if i remember right it was the oxygen sensor(??) it was the red LED below 2 below the battery logo. The heat was on and worked but i was told the cable the shuts off the heat was put on upside down so changing this around would fix that. The doors needed to be closed hard for them to close properly. I also noticed that the red stripe was a little off with its alignment from the door and the other body panels.

The car started first time and I believe it was from cold. The brake pedal seemed to go down a a lot before the car seemed to slow down. The clutch pedal was on the hard side to push in (compared to a 2001 car). There was also a knock/banging/looseness from the steering wheel this was more apparent when turning left to right quickly. Engine seemed to pull wheel through all gears.

Body panels: Rust holes on both from fenders by the wheels also on the back by the wheels. Strut towers where rust free. I was told the floor pans where in good condition and hole free. There was rust under the paint on the trunk. under the hood looked good with no visible rust.

The guy is asking $2500 for it and is an older guy who is a VW guy. He had 3 ghia's. One was a drag car, one was a completed project street car and the other he was in the process of restoring. He is selling the GTI to fund putting a lift in his home shop.

Are there any red flags? Is it worth what he is asking? Are the rust patches relatively easy to repair?

Thanks for reading

Dean

Although I am not the most knowledgeable in the mk1 field, I have done my fair share of reading.

-Interior, sounds good
-The vent window can be an adventure. If the gaskets are bad they are expensive to replace. Latch, not sure. You would have to buy a used one most likely.
-Ah, the infamous door sag. Here is an easy "ghetto rig" that isn't all that shady: http://toplessrabbit.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=1476
-Heater control. Not sure what he meant about that. Maybe the heater valve is backwards? But I didn't think that was possible. It shouldn't be too hard to fix though.
-OXS LED info http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?4475473-oxs-light-on

-How did the car start the first time? I think you missed a word.
-A good brake overhaul is necessary I would assume.
-Clutch is harder to press than a mkIV. As long as it isnt making creaking/grinding noises of metal cable on metal you're fine. If it is replace the cable and make sure it isn't sawing into the firewall.
-Sounds like the lower steering column bearing is gone if the noise came from inside the cabin. http://www.germanautoparts.com/Volkswagen/Cabriolet/Steering/588/1

-Pictures of rust would be great.
-How do the pinch welds look? How does it look by the rear jacking points? That's the only rust my cabby had.
-Rust around the windshield? Check carefully under the seal.
-Sounds like you have rust on/around the fenders. Rear are harder than front. A good rust repair takes time and welding skill, but sounds like you would be up for it.
-look at the floor pans. Put the car on ramps/jack stands and peek under it with a flashlight. That will quickly give you an indication of further rust issues.

Price wise, that is reasonable IMO. However there are some things wrong with it. Just remember, it will take some cash to get it working correctly. The rust seems to be the only main red flag to me. Here is a link that may help you just generally. http://www.cabby-info.com/Files/BuyingACabriolet.pdf http://vwgolfmk1.org.uk/index.php?page=cedi&type=misc&id=54 Personally I would try to talk him down a bit. Maybe a little under 2k.. Just remember good rust repair takes effort. If it has rust through in one place, it has it in others. Not to discourage you but just to keep in mind price wise.

I've been trying to find a way to reattach the vent windows, but from what I've read, none of the adhesives hold it well enough, and with how expensive they are, I've been leery to try any of them myself. Your best bet to fix it from what I've seen is to either just silicone it shut, or replace the vent window with one out of an 83-89 cabrio (they had bolted windows as opposed to glued)
If you do want to try to reglue it and you need a latch though, I should have a latch I could spare.

The oxygen sensor just needs to be reset every 30k miles. To my understanding, cabrios just had a reset button, but for my rabbit, I had to remove the bezel to get access to the left of the gauge cluster. There will be a little tab that you need to pull. You can pull it with some kind of hook (I just bent wire and went fishing)

rust is a pain to fix, but other than that it sounds pretty good. Brakes will need work of course, but as I've learned over the past few weeks, brakes on these things are actually really simple to work on. If you can get him to go down on the price a bit, to around 1750-2k, I would say go for it.

Probably not the worst deal if you can get him a bit under 2k. Front fender looks pretty rough; might be easier to source a used replacement.

I bought mine last october. It only had 72k miles, but the interior was bad (missing headliner, cracked dash, ripped up seats). Its triangle windows were caulked shut and the latches were in the glovebox. The hood and roof were badly faded, but the rest of the car was not bad. Car ran and drove pretty well, and didn't leave me stranded on our 80 mile maiden voyage home. Had some rust in the each corner of the rear apron, and the rocker panel was smashed up a bit on the driver's side from improper jacking/lifting. All in all it was a pretty solid car that had never been crashed (all original panels) and only had minor body work to one door. It was riding on 13" steelies with walmart tires. The seller was asking $2000 and we negotiated an agreeable about from there. He wasn't much of a car guy, and was moving so I had that going for me.

Anyway it was my first MK1 and project car (I've had project motorcycles before) and its been a fun and frustrating road. I now have over $4000 into the car, and its still on jack stands in my garage! That being said, I hope to have it on the road in the next month or so. Search my username to see project thread.

My biggest suggestion is don't be afraid to be patient. I trolled the classifieds on here (and craigslist) for years before I found mine. I'm really glad I waited, because I almost bought a few clapped out heaps along the way. Also try expanding your search radius.

Good luck and have fun whatever you decide!!
