Hey guys,

Happy to join you with a GTI VII. This is my fifth VW after a MKIII, IV, n V GTIs, and a MKVI Golf R. I traded that in for an E90 3-series and unfortunately regretted it for *almost* the entire time. I am happily back in the family, and thoroughly impressed with this generation of Golfs. It feels as torquey as my R but lighter on its feet, the new steering system is great. I miss nothing out of my BMW.

Here he is:

Tints on day 3, that was enough fishbowl action for me!

A couple of observations:

- WTH is up with the different MDI cables? I have the blue one, so far I can't get album art to show with an iPod or an iPhone 6+ with the lightning adapter. It also looks like the SD card route requires some voodoo magic and encoding the album art into the file and resizing and it all kind of sucks.

- This is an SE so there is no nav, but it does have Car-Net which has a GPS and a phone. I've used Car-Net for kicks and they find my location exactly, and are able to guide me to where I want to go but only by guiding me over the phone. They say they can "push the direction to my nav" and their system "shows that I received it" but nothing ever shows up on the screen. I wonder if there will be a way to enable it for our head units, since we are already equipped with GPS. Has this been discussed at all?

- Tomorrow I plan on taking it to the exhaust shop and seeing if there is a resonator that can be removed. I've done this on my MKV GTI and VI Golf R, always made a noticeable difference and sounded great! Enough to hold you over for an exhaust. If this has not been done before, I'll update tomorrow.

Thanks, all!

UPDATE: Clip added after resonator delete.

Congrats! Talk to me about how you mounted your front plate. I decided to not mount my front plate 'cause the car just looks way cleaner without. However, I've already received a couple of tickets courtesy of the city of Chicago in the last week. Thanks in advance.

Thanks guys!
I had a 328i, completely base, manual. It made a great first impression, I loved the steering feedback and how composed it felt hugging corners. Overall it's a great car, just tough to go to one after a Golf R. Besides performance, I missed the heated seats, kessy, nice sound system, Bluetooth, heck it even lacked a compass. Didn't realize how attached I was to all that! This new style sold me immediately, I no longer miss the R. While the GTI is not AWD I trust I won't need to push the car up the driveway when we get a bit of snow as was the case on the BMW despite all season tires.

As for the plate, I bought a bracket, a frame, and zip ties! It's working well so far.. Hoping to be done with City of Chicago tickets..

No offense but you hardly had a BMW.

A 328i base car with its skinny steering wheel, softly sprung suspension and horrible seats was created as a lease darling and not as a drivers car.

It's really amazing the chasm in perception and substance between a base 3 series and a sport package/premium package car... not to mention adding in the 335i power.

It's like comparing a launch edition Golf to a GTI Autobahn or Golf R... It's the same car underneath everything but it's all different.

Funny you say that, I think that if BMW is known for one thing worldwide is NA inline sixes. As an enthusiast I wanted to own one before they go extinct.
I don't doubt that a loaded 335i would have been more comparable in equipment to my R and therefore easier to get used to and fall in love with, just good luck finding one in the Chicago area that isn't AWD or automatic or both.. I couldn't at the time and that's not something I would have compromised on. Come to think of it, that's one other thing BMWs have always been known for, great manual transmissions.. But you wouldn't know it is you went by what's available around here, hence why I got into a base

I am just saying your perception of what a 3 series is can change drastically from the build of the car to the powerplant.

I myself would never consider a non sport pack car after having driven one on a test drive a year ago.

I also am willing to wait or travel to get what I want.... some folks aren't.

Congrats on the GTI... its a much better car than the base 328i.

You're kind of really motivating me. I just picked up a SE like yours but without lighting package. I'm loving the red. At first I wanted the red then i wanted the white but then I eventually got the red. I mean i Like the White too and sometimes think i should have just got the white. But anyways, how is your resonator delete? Any notice in power or error codes and how much was it?

If a white one had been available with these specs I would have had a tough time deciding as well!

No change in power, just sound. It's a little deeper. Enough to notice for sure. I've done this to a few of my cars before deciding on which exhaust system to upgrade to.

The resonator is pretty heavy also, for whatever that's worth.

How is that high horse treating you?

awesome man, thanks for the pics. that thing does look big and some weight haha.. ill probably call around tosee what quote i can get too

So did they just replace the resonator with a straight pipe? I do like the sound, might consider it.

Congrats on the new GTI! The look so good in red, but after 12 years with a red car, it's time to switch for me. I like the charcoal grey color, but after seeing it in person, it's a bit too dark for me. I'll probably end up ordering white. Nice car, and it's good to see a resonator delete that actually sounds good.
