Hello All,

On my Audi S4 there was a way to display the gear number next to the letter D or S , whether in drive or sport modes. Is there a VCDS mod for the R that does this? I didn't see it in the VCDS sticky and couldn't find it anywhere. If anyone knows of one, could you please post it!

Just to be clear, when you are in D or S modes there is no gear # shown anywhere that I'm aware of (?) just the letter D or S in the instrument cluster depending on drive mode. I'm looking to display the gear # itself right next to the D or S letter in the instrument cluster. So it would read "5D" or "D5" whatever the order may be, but the current gear while in auto-drive modes D or S.

In the S4 this was done in :
Enable Automatic Gear selection shown in DIS
[02 – Auto Trans] [Adaptation – 10]
Select “Single Gear Display” from top channel drop down menu
Select “D on/S on” from New value drop down menu

I've looked in the VCDS on the R and this doesn't exist -- couldn't find it while searching around either. Any help?

Thank you

I asked this same question a few months ago over in the GTI forum. It was prompted by my noticing the same thing you did, and the fact that when in Europe last year I'd rented a VW Tiguan 2.0 TDI with 7-speed DSG (fun to drive, boatloads of torque) that did display the current gear. As far as I know nobody has come up with a solution yet.

However APR offers aftermarket programming for the DSG that also enables this gear indication, so it is doable. It's been speculated that the capability might lie in the DSG controller itself, not in the ECU.

I'd still like to enable this, but I'm not interested in the full APR package for the DSG.

Interesting - I wasn't aware that APR had a separate programming other than STage 1 , etc. Perhaps someone from APR knows the VCDS mod to do to get it to show up. I've searched the forums and internet and nothing. It's easily done in most Audi's, so I assume this is somewhere for our R's, we just cannot find it.

Thank you

My center screen displays gear selection when in S mode.
Not S mode, manual mode, right (gearshift selector pushed to the right, not pulled down)?

I had a HPA DSG tune in my MKVI GTI. it showed the gear selection in drive and sport. It also held the gear regardless of rpm, no auto upshifting. Higher redline as well. Im thinking of getting it for my R

I know the gear number will display in D or S if you manually change gears with the paddles but then the D or S reappears after a few seconds. Besides the gear number is so small anyway. It would be nice to get a nice fat display like how the speed shows.

Yeah, but that's because using the paddles while in auto mode temporarily puts you into manual. Then after some amount of time without again using the paddles it reverts back to auto. What we're looking for here is continuous gear indication when in normal auto

Doubtless APR does, but they may not have much incentive to tell!

My original question was in this huge long thread in the Golf/GTI Mk VII forum:
http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthre...howthread.php?7013354-VAGCOM-What-is-this-and-how-do-I-do-it-(new-to-VW)/page18

Here's a link to the APR DSG software:
http://www.goapr.com/products/tcu_upgrade_dq250_exx_fxx.html
Scroll down to Gear Display Indicator, about halfway down the page.

I haven't been following that thread recently, and it's now up to 50 pages! Maybe someone has posted something more recent? I'll go and check. Oh, and I'm also making an assumption about the R's programming being structurally similar to the GTI, although it can't of course be identical.

THIS!!! the 6pt font or whatever of the current manual mode display is just too frickin small for quick glances. With VCDS can you hack the UI?

I would also like this mod but have an additional request....I would like the manually induced manual mode while in S or D (by pulling the paddle shifter in S or D mode) to not return to S or D until you cancel it by holding down the right shifter. I have now had several occasions where I downshift to prepare for a pass on a two lane road, wait for a car to go past and then floor it only to find that the car has returned to S or D and upshifted. It's downright dangerous if you are expecting the car to stay in the gear you selected and pull out to pass then have to wait for the transmission to downshift 2-3 gears! I would at least like to be able to modify the return to S or D time to something like 1 minute instead of the 15 seconds or so that it is.

You can all give me a hard time for not wanting to reach down and slap the stick to the right but it's nice to not have to take your hands off the wheel.

Not sure what this video is trying to demonstrate, but it is definitely an R with a cluster that does what we are looking for.

Once again... looks like the ROW gets the good stuff, while the US is left with cookie cutter options. I wonder if our cars are capable of it with proper coding or if they have an inferior cluster to the ROW. It would certainly be interesting to get cluster coding from someone in a land far away and compare to ours to figure out what the answer is.

Anyone got a friend?

See previous post and link above. We already know the cluster can display the gear in D or S auto mode because APR's DSG software enables that.

I think we're hung up on semantics here... Yes it is clear that it is possible (although APR does not yet list programming for our TCU), I want to know (as I'm guessing a lot of others do) if it is possible through simple VCDS coding or whether it requires reprogramming or swapping a cluster out.

It should be possible possible via reprogramming alone (see APR), but we don't know by reprogramming what. Nobody else has found it in VCDS, at least so far.
