I've had my R two weeks now and thought I'd use the car's garage remote instead of the hand held one. Well where is it?? My other car's it's on the rear view mirror. My dealer can't even answer my question.

the homelink is currently not available as an option thru VWOA.

you could install it yourself using the know-how in the valentine radar detector install in this forum

and this:

(after seeing the interior of an S3, i'm guessing that essentially how the port installed option is done on the audi sibling by tapping a 12V and ground at the mirror and installing the module on the side of the compartment which holds the car-net buttons)

Don't believe this is a standard feature at all.
I'm amazed by some of the features VW chose to omit on their $40k top of line offering. My 2006 A3 had the integrated garage opener feature for crying out loud. I wish we could at least get some of these "premium features" as options on this car. I would tick the box for this one, I found the 3 programmable buttons very useful on the A3.

solved the Homelink problem

Yes, its hard to believe that a $40,000 car doesn't have Homelink. If it makes you feel better, neither the A3 or S3 has Homelink either.

There is good news, but it requires a little work on your part. The new Jetta offers Homelink. The Homelink transmitter is imbedded in the driver's side sun visor. You can buy the visor from http://www.oemplus.com/, but you will have to get it installed or install it yourself.

The trick is the new visor needs a power source and there isn't a wire run up to the existing visor to provide power to the Homelink transmitter.

I took my visor and 2007 GTI to a local stereo installer and they installed it for me and it worked perfectly.

Good Luck.

believe or not, the S3 has the homelink option starting in march 2015, but it seems to be incompatible with some lane keeping and advanced tech options...
Lack of Homelink for the R is IMO unforgivable. And with the Audi, being "incompatible" with that lane monitoring system is hogwash. And then there's the center console, the Swiss cheese bumper, no spare tire even when the Audi one fits. Just. Don't. Understand.

Armrest doesn't open, no spare, no sunroof, early Euro model turbos blew, Pretoria not an option, no LED tails, black mirrors, paint is too thin/bad, Transport bags scratched paint, Japan plate frames, excessive Stealership markup, Focus RS is far superior, battery doesn't have its own container, APR is too expensive and doesn't love us, no tow hook option, fake sound, free preorder swag isn't here yet, radio gremlins, the top up warning and now the unforgivable lack of Homelink. Think that is the complete list.

I still love my R. [emoji12]

Hey. If you can get a POS $18k Chevy with homelink, a spare tire, easily installed license plates, etc... a $40k VW should have all that and more.
Nobody with an 18K Chevy gets their panties in a twist about the need to drill the front bumper to put on a license plate. As for the absolute necessity of a garage opener and its omission being unforgivable, not everyone has a garage, never mind one that opens with a remote. And there are plenty of automotive journalists who will tell you all day long about the absolute necessity of "safety items" such as lane minders that even cheap Hyundai's have as standard and how unconscionable it is for Mercedes and BMW to charge extra for them -- and I'll bet you couldn't find half a dozen people on this forum who would even tolerate such a thing in their car.

Anyone who absolutely has to have Homelink might find this post of interest: http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=270476

You left out: ripples in the windshield, uncomfortable seats, ringing in the ears from somewhere under the hood, wheels and tires damaged by potholes, strut pucks not removed, mirrors don't power-fold.

I'm thinking of installing my existing GDO remote, which isn't very large, somewhere inside the roof console. I'd solder wires around its existing switch circuit and lead them to a suitable external switch in the overhead light switch panel. This GDO remote use a single lithium cell that literally lasts years, so it's not really necessary to tap into the car's 12V power and then have to convert it down to the 3V or whatever it is. Minor disassembly every few years to replace the battery doesn't seem like a big deal. I did something like this on another car years ago and it worked out fine.

If you don't have to have an actual HomeLink, for instance to operate multiple doors, this seems like a simpler and less expensive solution.

I'm not going to argue what should and should not exist for options, but the way people talk about the issues is comedic. If it's not the car for you, this forum is probably also not the forum for you, right? Or did you buy one anyway and complain after the fact.

I for one have never used a spare tire before. Maybe I'm lucky. I'll just call roadside assist anyway. My license plate install was pretty damn easy. My garage door opener fits nicely in the spot behind the shifter. To each their own.

Shut your blasphemous mouth! VW will give us homelink when they feel like it and we prove we deserve it. You expect to have homelink included simply because you paid $40k for the car!!! Fool take back your words now before you anger VW, or worse Vortex!

I'm joking... But seriously how is homelink not standard on a $40k car? At the very least include it as a port option.

No one thinks that list is a little long and slightly ludicrous? Why can't we just get the same car as everyone else in the entire world? Probably because VW knows we would buy the Golf R even if it didn't come with a windshield and we'd say it's cool because "look at that soft touch interior though", and the Apr windshield with the blue tint looks better, anyways all you have to do is put on some driving goggles or just add an after market windshield for only $1200 it's not even that much money.
