Yes I know - two completely different cars. Two completely different technologies. One is brand new body style, the other outgoing and being replaced by heavens knows what.

I have four kids, but one is away at college and when my wife is home we would use her brands new minivan anyway if everyone were going. Usually on weekends it's me and the two little ones anyway.

The thing is I can get either of these for the exact same lease. Same money up front. Same monthly payment, miles per year, etc.

The Passat has nav, back up camera, leatherette (which I prefer to real leather), awesome gas mileage and lots of room.
But in five months it's going to look old. Awesome still but old gen.

On the other hand the gti is an s. So it's pretty basic. Interlagos cloth, fog lights. No nav (I don't care about nav) no backup camera (should be nice).

Both are DSG. I've owned a mark four vr6 gti and a mark five gti and loved them both. Also had an 09 Jetta tdi and that was very cool - the fuel economy really made that car but I imagine the Passat will feel far more luxurious. In fact in the half hour I drove them it did.

This is a lease but either car I'll buy at the end and either keep or give to my son as a college graduation present.

I'm having a hard time. Both cars are special. I just can't drive something boring. I've had three Honda accords. Awesome cars that I got rid of quickly and haven't missed for a second. In the other hand if the buyer of that vr6 wanted to sell it back I'd pick it up tomorrow.

Thanks in advance!

The Passat isn't special. By any sense of the imagination.

If you can get away with having the GTI with 3 kids at home then by all means, get the GTI. If not, the Passat is a fine car for hauling family around.

And technically it's MKIV and MKV, you don't type out mark.

Thanks for the feedback. I disagree though. After driving Camry, accord, Mazda 6 I think the Passat TDI does feel special. But not compared to the Gti. But you're right though, if I can get away with the gti it will be a far more enjoyable drive.

I like the TDI because I like the owning a diesel long term. Id like to keep this car in the family. I can do that with either though.

Both have far better mpg than my gas eating suv that I'm trading in and don't need.

I do miss my mark four but I'm really open to either.

The reason for that is that the Passat is near top of the line and the GTI is the entry level model. If I was getting the same price on a fully equipped GTI I wouldn't have a seconds hesitation.
I get that. Just thinking off hand the Passat at that trim level gets you what over the GTI S? Sunroof, Nav and backup cam?

Leathette, nav, backup cam, roof.

Of these the nav is least important to me.

Dealer also just me tension a 2013 driver edition gti with very low mileage that has leather, nav, roof and not sure about backup cam. The buy payment would be the same as the lease on the new ones. I've read that the new platform on the gti is awesome though.

The back up cam is a bit of a push IMPO, it can be a little distracting when you are trying to back up, and it pulls your attention away from where it should be, your mirrors and back window. Sure its handy for backing into a spot just for distance, but in a little GTI I doubt you will miss it.

I was doing the same thing, GTi S 3 door stripper, or the sportwagon with some goodies, I liked the idea that if I was going to get a GTI having one with no roof, HID's camera, leather, ect seemed like a better choice then a loaded up car. A GTI is for driving and all those things just ad weight and complexity, something I felt the GTI did not need.

At the end of the day I went with the wagon because its our only car for now, so it had to work for us, but if you already have a Vanborghini in the house for trips to the shops, and moving crap around, then I say get the GTI, have a little fun with life instead of the snoozer TDI.

Plus I'm sure your kid will love it many times more then getting a used Passat.
