Re: Anyone getting harassed by cops a lot? (vertius)

This is what I don't like about cops. I respect the good things they do, and I don't immediately judge them as "pigs" (usually), but let me remind you of an old proverb: Absolute power corrupts absolutely. I was scared each of the 3 times I was pulled over for speeding because of this, not because I did anything wrong. I know that I have absolutely no recourse against anything the cop says or does when he has me on the side of the road. And that's a very scary, demeaning, and intimidating situation. Some may argue that I have recourse in a court of law, or by filing a complaint - B.S. My word against a cops is useless in a court of law, and filing a complaint does just that; it sits in a file somewhere. The truth is that you can do absolutely everything correct during a traffic stop, and it won't matter one lick if the cop is feeling grumpy or aggressive, because he has absolute power. Scary.
I don't know how to fix the problem, though.

What good is going to come from turning this into a "I hate cops" thread full of blanket statements, generalities, and the typical bull****?
It was just fine talking about this particular situation, but threads talking about cops in general typically go down a slippery slope fast.

Re: Anyone getting harassed by cops a lot? (GTIinfuture)

They go down a slippery sloap fast because police in this country
are consistently corrupt, hostile, and assinine. It is a national problem
that hasn't been properly recognized or dealt with. I've tried to give
the police the benefit of the doubt, but 1 out of 2 dealings I'd ever
had with them have proven, beyond a reasonable doubt, that too
many cops are rapacious ****heads with egomania. I expect to
find *******s in every field. I'm amazed that the police have
such an usually high concentration of them. More than a rabbit farm.

True. Why don't we bring this back on-topic and talk about being profile by the cars we drive? I know I have advised my A2 GTI-driving brother to abandon his University plates for commercial ones to avoid more scrutiny than he needs, but he has still managed to lose his license a couple of times now. And while he thinks that I drive like a crazy mofo, I have a clean record!
The fact of the matter is that he's one of those backwards-hat wearing punks who, while not doing anything particularly wrong, can usually be nailed for leaving his car unregistered or uninsured or for transporting booze while he's underage after a cursory "your taillight is out" stop. You get the idea? He's just irresponsible, and I suspect (as I suspect many police also do) that he is one of many kids who is and... coincidentally drives a VW because his irresponsible friends do too.
Same would be true for any car that is characterized as having a youthful driver population. Neons, Cavaliers, Civics...

I'm glad you took what I said to heart. http://****************.com/smile/emthdown.gif

I just now realized the ridiculousness of that statement. Two experiences with cops. One of them was bad. Therefore, all cops are bad, beyond a reasonable doubt!

Understand that with the Feds cutting funding to the municipal level, they're going to do what they have to in order to make up the short-comings. Increased DWI,speeding,"wrong place at the wrong time", they'll be out in force to make up the gaps. A fellow ClubB5'er got a speeding ticket recently and the cop gave him a ticket for the radar detector, well actually a "Obstruction of Vision" ticket for the detector being on the glass even though it was behind the inspection sticker....

Re: Anyone getting harassed by cops a lot? (sar4497)

I stuck my hand in a dog's mouth 2 times. Once he bit it off. Therefore, all dogs are bloodthirsty killers.
I drove a VW twice in my life. One time, it broke down. Therefore, all VW's are piles of junk and horrible cars.
I grabbed a power line twice. One time, nothing happened. Therefore, it is completely safe for me to do chin-ups on the power line outside my house.
Gotta love this kind of logic...

Re: Anyone getting harassed by cops a lot? (strohj)

I only get harassed by cops when I deserve it, which is most of the time. I am, and have always been, a psychotic driver. Luckily most of the time there are no cops around.
Cops have also let me go with a warning a few times. When I'm caught, I'm caught. I'm cool to them and respect that they have a job to do.
I've never been hassled when I didn't do something to earn it.
Being well-dressed, and projecting a conservative image can help cut down on harassment (and increase your chances of getting off), something to think about.

Oh boy, we're really going to wander off into left field, but I can't resist. Maybe we have too many cops?

It begs the question: If we need the number we have on the streets in order to protect us from "real" criminals, then how can they afford to spend so much time trying to generate revenue (see the "Road Flashing" thread) instead of doing the actual protecting?
Image

An example... We have a branch of county level law enforcement simply refered to as "The Harris County Constable's Office". They are seperate and distinct from the county sheriff's dept. and I really don't know what their main purpose is beyond working for the county courts, etc... They also patrol neighborhoods under paid contracts with the local homeowners associations.
Well, recently there was a wanted sex-offender spotted in my subdivision, so our constable presense was beefed up, looking for this guy. In order to pay for the additional patrol time, these sorta-cops began ticketing residents for everything under the sun (failure to signal, inadequite stopping at a stop sign, 3-4 mph over the speed limit, etc...). In short, offenses that would normally be overlooked.
Its almost like a Mafia protection racket. Thanks but no thanks guys. I'd rather protect my family myself.

cop beat up minority 100 times...call the cop 100 time and never came...the whole department don't care...really bad logic huh? who pay them to do the job? the person who they are actually beating down! Not all cops are bad...but some people believe that all the complain about cop harassing is nonsense and say "cop always respect me and never do nothing to me" from personal experience...those people must have really good logic..."if it never happen to me, it doesn't exist"

Re: Anyone getting harassed by cops a lot? (sar4497)

read my posting yutz. The intent is that I've had more than two dealings,
and half of my dealings have been piss poor. Read the boards, I'm hardly
alone. And my statement is that 'too many' policeman engage in
inappropriate behavior, not all.

Re: Anyone getting harassed by cops a lot? (strohj)

it sounds to me like you did nothing wrong. it may be the cops may have been looking for a car fitting your description, it may just be like people said they were grumpy, and out fishin'...
I would definately take this to court, and get a lawyer... do you suppose they have a tape of the whole incident?

On the whole, I have nothing but good things to say about the Calgary Police Service. I haven't ever been harassed by them, and I've only ever gotten one ticket - for turning right where a right turn was prohibited between certain hours of the day. So I deserved it. It seems to me that the CPS doesn't usually give tickets out except to those that deserve them.
I've even had a couple of good experiences with both the Calgary police and the RCMP. Both cases involved the police using laser radar at the bottom of a hill. In Calgary, I was probably doing 57 in a 50 zone, and they didn't nail me for it. On the Trans Canada Highway west of Calgary, I drove over the crest of a hill doing just over 120 in a 110 zone, and at the bottom of the hill was an RCMP cruiser. Again, they could have nailed me for it, but they didn't.

What other profession beats as many people as the police?
They must be second after Boxers....

Come to Jail and find out.

Most of the time the Costable's primarly (around here anyway) just pick people up that have warrents. I know they do traffic type stuff, but mainly this is what they do here...beside sit with their lights on when road construction is going on.
And depending on what time it is, will depend on how quickly you can get pulled over. If it's about closeing time for the clubs/bars, then they will pull you over for you license plate light being out or something simularly insignificant just to see if you're drunk or what-not.
