DIY: Honk To Chirp Alarm Mod, for about $10

I bought my 18th VW on Friday (15' GLI), so of course, I had to personalize it. I've never liked the honk that the factory alarm has for confirming lock. This gives the car an updated chirp. Video at the bottom.

This DIY is very similar to the one I wrote up and posted in the mkiv forums years ago, as the location of the oem alarm horn is almost exactly where it was on the mkiv's.

I did a diy writeup in the mkv forums when I did this mod as well (for you mkv peeps). I have done this to dozens of cars, ranging in years and generations.

But onwards to one of my favorite and cheapest mods to do to VW's from 1999+

Tools/ Materials Needed:
-12v 6 tone auto alarm horn
-10mm socket, open end wrench
-wire cutters
-trim removal tool (optional)
-electrical tape, soder-gun, shrink wrap

1. Crack open beer

2. put your wipers in winter/service mode (turn off engine, press down once on wiper control arm, before opening door. This parks the wipers in an upright position)

3. Open hood

4. Drink beer, admire how clean your engine bay is not.

5. Locate the middle of your rain tray. The horn is directly below where the two tray pieces overlap. remove the rubber trim from the front, peel it back just past the middle (I can confirm this location on all 15's)

6. Hows that beer? Check for leaks.

7. Remove passenger side section of rain tray. This part can be a bit finnicky to pop out. it sits in a tight little slot right under the glass. I find it easier to start on the corner, push from underneath straight up.
Be patient, dont apply pressure to your glass.

8. Now you should see the horn mounted to its very own mount. unscrew the single bolt that holds the aluminum horn bracket. once done, should be easy to unplug horn (push down on clip, pull)

Depending on the size of the alarm horn you bought, you might be able to mount it on the oem horn bracket. I ordered a bunch of these specifically to do this on these cars, so I knew they would fit.

If yours doesn't, mount it somewhere out of the way on the passenger side (theres no wiper linkage on that side that may interfere)

9. Take a break. It's been a rough day, have another beer. You deserve it champ.

10. Add mini spades to the alarm wiring. I ran out, so I clipped down a couple spades I had. Crimp, soder, and shrink wrap. (Ive never had this mod fail on the dozens of cars Ive installed it on)

11. plug in the horn, reinstall bracket. The car side connection is positive on the curved side, negative on the flat side i.i.r.c.

12. reinstall the rain tray. Bit of a pain on a new car, but basically work backwards, pushing the tray back into the wedge/slot, starting from a corner, all the way around, until the tray sits flush or a bit lower than the glass.

It should be noted that only the GLI has this horn under the rain tray.
If not under the tray, it will be in the passenger front wheel well I believe. Which is where it was on the mkv, and I did a DIY for that one too.

Any specific alarm you would recommend? Just any generic off ebay?
Basically yes.
something like this is what Ive been using for over 10 years to do these

The specific one I used on this 15 gli was smaller.

As long as it's a 12v 6 tone horn, it will work. And you can mount it anywhere there's space. I usually look to see it has over a 100 db rating.

Just confirmed, all mkvi's / 15's have the alarm horn in the same location under the tray. Trendline+ to GLI.

Great news :) But on my Jetta, the horn and the lock sound seem to be the same...are they really? Will it affect my honking? :D

There's two individual horns. It's a separate horn for the wheel honk, and the alarm honk. they sound the same.

VW has been this way since the mkiv's. Which is why this mod is so easy to do, without having to modify vagcom or software.

We're one of the few brands that still has a separate system like this.

To recap, your normal car horn will stay the same. The alarm horn and sound will change to the chirp, and panic sound as shown in the video.

And basically all 12v 6 tone auto alarm horns will sound like the one in the video, volume will depend on the db rating. I recommend having at least 100 db.

Cool, thanks, something else to add to the list :)

Before everyone goes out and just starts buying 6 tone sirens, not all mk6 jettas have the separate horn in the rain tray. Be it s, se, sel, or gli. I for a fact know that my 2012 GLI does not have a separate alarm horn in the rain tray. I've disabled the alarm honk since it activates the two horns (one on each bumper corner) of my car and is too loud for just a confirmation notification.

It is feasible that the latest rendition of the mk6 jetta has the separate alarm horn standard (not confirming or denying).

Before following this DIY, check under your raintray.

edit: PS: it's not in the rear fender section either.

It wouldn't be in the rear fender on any model. The mkv had it in the front passenger side fender well.

I work at a dealership, and have confirmed there is a separate horn on all the mkvi's we have.

Just went out and checked, the 11' and 12' jettas are the same location as my 15' gli.

This will be the same for any N/A / Cdn cars. I cant confirm overseas, but Id assume they wouldnt re-engineer alarm horn placement.

It take's 10 minutes to find out where your's is. Pulling up the rain tray is fast and easy.

Sorry. i didn't mean the rear fender itself. Was talking about the rear section of the front fender. Yes, i'm aware that they all have the same mounting location for a horn, but not all cars have the factory alarm only horn as featured in your DIY.

I think we're having a miscommunication?

There's a stand alone horn in the front area by the rad strictly for the steering wheel horn.

Every Golf/Jetta has a separate horn for just the alarm confirmation/panic, located in the rain tray.

If yours is different, Id have to see pics, because at our dealerships, all mkvi's are in this location, regardless of trim

(Although the only trim level I dont have in stock is a base trendline 2.slo (Can), as most of these were order only here)

I've got a 2014 GLI, and only thing under the rain tray was the soundaktor which has since been removed. On mine when you arm the alarm the honk sounds like it's coming from the front passenger fender area. There was another thread a while ago saying the 2013.5 & 2014 glis were the only ones to use a single horn for both alarm and honking I believe.
