GC will have higher 60mph rpm and is considered a close ratio, qucker to shift gears. (probally the closest ratio 4 speed you can get!)

you need more than just the transmission to do a 5 speed swap
infact you are using 100mm axles and the GC has 90mm axle flanges

not going to work without a lot of swapping

AUG are plentiful since so many cabriolets had them.

soo .. you wouldn't really recommend it ? I already did the 90 mm conversion but i don't have the gearbox mount for it . Anyways ... what close ratio gearbox could you recommend that will have a lower rpm in 5th ? from what cars or what codes . Thank you very much .

If decide to use the GC tho .. what is your personal thought on it being fitted on a TD engine ?

any 020 small input spline will mount to your AAZ

4K trans were used in GTI and scirocco

since you already have a 90mm conversion then you have less options actually
the 100mm flanges had more transmissions up to 94

lower rpm in 5th?
FF, FN, FK -- any of the F# models
there are some newer ones also that people rate highly
im not versed on all the different ones
ACH seems to be a good diesel one according to the charts

reminder about your upshift/reverse light, early models used different switch for those

hey check this one out...I cant find a "GH" code...am I just not looking hard enough? what gear set do I have?

Image
never seen that code, and usually the code is stamped at the top of the bell housing....

But what is the difference?
When I was buying my 81 rabbit diesel new I chose the LS.
The Tranny differences at the time were a 4spd with a .71 ratio or the 5spd with a .71 the differences were 500 more for the 5spd.
I happily drove my 4 spd for many a carefree miles, I started out getting between 55 and 58mpg (55 was the speed limit) when new on cross country jaunts.
I too suffered the shifting from heel on steep climbs, as in Mt. Eagle, or the raise from the river to the Plateau of Illinois. Normally I got between 49, to 52 mph consistently.

In about 91 I had the unfortunate timing belt disaster, that placed the Piston in to the head.... (new belt failed after 400 miles) which caused me to source a new engine. I found a 81 Rabbit Diesel L for 500 and bought it. It had the same mileage, and a 5spd tranny.

I only noticed a difference in driving it around town. I likened it to having a gear between 3rd and 4th, and made my shifting easier in town...
On the highway, I didn't notice much of a difference between the 4 or 5 speed. The big difference was in running the a/c or not.

Unlike my 5spd Toyota that got 34mpg on the highway, I would see a 400 rpm drop in the tach when entering 5th gear. I didn't have a Tach on my Rabbit.

4 or 5, in a Diesel Rabbit I didn't notice a change in mpg at all.
When I sold it, with over 300K I was still getting about 40 around town....The biggest difference in change was the price of Diesel from .35/gal to 2 dollars or more...... :) and most places I tanked up, gave cash discounts.

I still love the smell of Diesel in the Morning......

Not that I am aware of, VW gave the gasser rights to Chrysler but kept the Diesel to Rabbit only.
A lot of the Euro Cabbies/Golfs still have Carbs up to the 90s.

I can still remember the ads from VW as to why own a copy when you can have the Original.... :)

haha @ briano **insert age wisecrack here**

sorry rabbit jockey I missed your post thanks!!! I founds it now!!

I have an ach I think Im going to go dig it out and check it in a bit but that was my swap option! we'll see when I do my comparison!!

ff and fn are really nice. i have a gp 4 speed in my diesel rabbit, its nice on the highway but 123 are spaced out really far, and even with my aaz swap its a big jump between gears, dropping over 2000 rpm's everytime i shift. i don't know how i ever got along with the 1.6na

haha @ briano **insert age wisecrack here**
Don't laugh to loud, as OLD Age, and Treachery wins out over youth, and vigor every time.......
There are old Pilots, and bold Pilots, however there are no OLD and BOLD pilots ever.

I can remember happily as a young'un riding in the rumble seat of a Model T, and the back seat of my parents new 57 Chevy Belair.

@briano

that would be a sick memory to have haha! I get to work on old rods like that from time to time but I never got to experience one when it was originally like 3 feet off the ground instead of 3 inches haha....too many respect for the elders of the car world! they always have the coolest stories :thumbup:

@rabbitjockey

the reasoning behind it is there is a cruise that goes on up here in new mexico called the Jemez cruise every april-ish...its like a 170 mile round trip mixed between highway/interstate and mountain runs...how would I best outfit my car to be able to handle that...as far as transmission wise....im sort of the black sheep haha besides being a diesel because the posse is like 30 some 350zs tons of wrxs lancers swapped Hondas and mk5 and newer gtis...so it goes without saying im the lawn gnome on the freeway that everyone swerves around

so far I'll have a ported head, and a giles superpump, and rebuilt injectors..oh and probably a 2" exhaust if I have time to mess with it.

I did a Cruise once, a few hundred Dubs from Duluth, GA to Helen GA for the show sowo...
The amount of IDIOTS in the Cruise Scared the bejeezers out of me, and I was in a gasser... To see folks driving at 90+mph and Drivers sticking their heads out of the windows with both arms so the passenger could steer while the driver took pictures...... I am surprised no one was killed.....
Note to Self "won't be doing that anytime ever...."

Then again the Cruise from Ringold back to Atlanta from the Bug-a-paluza was different as we were observing the Speed limit more or less, and when I would pass a Beetle or another rabbit, golf, passat,or cabby, everyone nodded or waved. I like to drive at or slightly above the limit....(topless).....
But a 120 mile drive in 90 degrees and sunny, a top and a working a/c is a good thing.

haha you must have a buncha crazies up there! its not like that here...everyone from the general feel of it seems like everyone is wondering what everyone else is doing there haha... not too wild but when the speed limit is 75 and im stuck at 60 I would still consider myself an obstacle. so I would like to be able to "cruise" at 75... is that possible? I don't really care about mileage...is there a such thing as highway + rabbit diesel?

Ok got it figured out!....not really haha I just copied and pasted

GH---------AOP

3.54-------3.45

1.94-------1.94

1.29-------1.29

0.96-------0.91

------------0.75

3.89FD----3.94FD

so How would this affect highway driving? I have a higher ratio in the GH 4th vs the AOP 5th but have a lower final drive ratio in the 4spd...is that basically what Im seeing?

what would happen with a 3.89FD in the AOP??

Sick!!! man wolfwalker that is the sickest calculator ive seen!! I saved it to my favorites!!!! thank you thank you!!

the results if anyone cares to see!!

@2500 RPM

GH-----3.89FD----------AOP-----3.94FD
3.54-----13.32mph-----3.45-----13.49mph
1.94-----24.30mph-----1.94-----23.99mph
1.29-----36.54mph-----1.29-----36.08mph
0.96-----49.10mph-----0.91-----51.14mph
--------------------------0.75-----62.05mph

So depending on the power I have and just playing with the calculator I can be at 2600 rpm at 65mph
I never had a tach on my diesel so idk what my cruising rpm was but I just took a stab at 2500.

I am a very happy camper after reading all the posts above, I thought all my efforts of tracking down a 5spd from a diesel was going to be in vain!! thank you everyone for helping me out even though this thread had nothing to do with me haha sorry for the jack!!:D

ya the GH vs AOP is like truely adding another gear on the end

compared to a GP and AOP, not much different really...

for now i'll keep my 3 GP and one GC and be merry.

all 4 of them could use a serious overhaul though
well the GC probally has the lowest miles, and it ran fine.
